Re: shoppin for a digital camera
just purchased a Casio 5.0 megapixals, 3X zoom, 2.7 LCD comes with a docking station to recharge the battery and port pics directly to the internet - it's my second Casio - lost the first one . . . .
simple to use - real slim - Exilim -
with a one meg card it holds over 400 pictures
and i never have to worry about the lithium battery dying
$249 - cheaper on the internet
some advice - some of the digital cameras only have a LCD - they don't have a "viewfinder" or whatever
my camera doesn't have one didn't think it would be a problem - but there were times that the sun was sooooooooooooooooooo bright that i couldn't see the image on the LCD - i just shot blindly - and that's not so good if you're going for the artsy stuff
small enough to fit in your tight jean pocket

Most viewfinders are on digital cameras unless it is an SLR. The View Finder is handy as a means to compose a shot but for focusing you would need to compensate for the mandatory error that will occur based on where the finder is located compared to what the lens is seeing.

the camera guy told me that as the LCD's get larger - mine is 2.7 and the overall camera size gets smaller and slimmer - the viewfinder - is what is being left off some of the new digital models

Right because cameras that are not SLRs do better with an LCD, as the viewfinder is almost useless. On the other hand the LCD on most SLRs aid in the setting up, status and review of the camera and picture taking functions but is useless in composing and focusing because you already have the benefit of a through the lens view of what is in front of the camera.
The LCDs on the Canon 10D was notably very bad for even reviewing the picture you just shot. Canon has put a larger LCD on the 20D and has dubbed it the 30D, I don't own on yet so I cannot say if this truly represents any improvement or just a way to keep the camera in the choice spots.

Thanks. As you can tell I am wedded to Canon offerings, because I like companies that look like they intend to stick around in the business.
I think most of Sony’s cameras have some video capability that is better than the other offerings.
It is easier to say which so-called cameras brands to avoid.
Anything by Minolta.... they have completely gone out the camera business (I think they sold to Sony)
Anything by HP....they have reliability problems, because they switch manufacturers from model to model.
Casio seems to have a lock on the micro line but I know nothing about these.
Anything by Gateway
Anything by Kodak
Fuji and Olympus are borderline in my books for small cameras. I think they do better with their pro-sumer models.
Anyway I am not an expert but you can get expert opinions on sites such as:
DPReview
Steve's DigiCam
