My bookmarks and bookmark toolbar folder just disappeared in a series of crashes. I keep getting memory dumps but today is just crazy. Now I have the browser page but no bookmarks. This thing is dying a slow painful death I think.

Three things:
You are running out of physical memory to run you stuff.
You are running out of hard drive space so that you operating system cannot swap out programs when the physical memory is over taxed.
Your temp, recycle, internet temp and other temporary caches or locations are either corrupted or full.
Run disk cleanup
Run Defrag
Go to search and search for temp files using this search string in the search box:
*.tmp
Your conclusion could be correct your system is dying.

Re: Plus I can't get my pics off
Thank you for the answer Tuff Gong! Yes I have done the defrag, the system clean up and such, but I'll try to go looking for the bookmarks, that is kinda sad, I was saving some beading sites I'll prolly never find again!
I've been trying for months to take my photos off cause I'm scared I'll loose them but I couldn't get the ROXIO to work, so I have the disk so I deleted it, now I can't install it! grrrrr, so pics are stuck on this thing.
I put in Zone Alarm and it is telling me that the original Epson printer is trying to act lik ea server? I tried to remove the printer and it won't let me.
Does anyone know where I can find a reasonable gently used laptop?

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
I have a dell desk top with XP that is 6 years old. I dunno specs, is this you mean?
Dell dinension desktop Pentium 4 CPU 160 Ghz 159Ghz 256 RAM
I have 4.02 GB 21% free space
Deleting pics like mad to free up space but I can't get them off onto a CD.
It's time for this one to visit the river. Just kidding, it needs proper recycling!

If you are running XP you don't need an extra program to burn CDs. Just put an empty CDr in the drive and drag 700mb worth of files at a time to the CD then tell to write the CD.
Or you can upgrade your CD to a DVD Burner and drag 4Gig at a time to the DVD Burner.
As I suggested before DL and install Picasa2 from Google and you will able to search, catalog and burn your pics with ease.
My guess is your registry is corrupted with orphan installations. You will need a program such as registry cleaner or to clean you HD and reinstall the operating system.
Did you do a search for temp files?
The temp files alone will be enough to cause major problems in running windows.
Are you running XP with Service Pack upgrade?

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
Thanks for the offer QK, but with slow dial-up that isn't really an option. Worse case scenairo if this thing does up and dead is I think it will still be possible to retrieve the photos someday(I hope).
I'm hoping and praying I can somehow get a new machine (even a good used one), and then maybe move them to that one then off.
I really think my photo files are the problem, when I do a defrag there are lots and lots of space that cannot be defraged? What's up with that? OK, no time now to try anything new, but i will be back later and attempt the find file thing and make a picture CD!
Thanks all for some help!
Tuff Gong, I haven't had a chance to do the search for the temp files, I'll attempt that later on tonight.
I'm not sure how to move pictures to the CD? [ QUOTE ]

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
Well that was interesting! I tried several system restore points (farthest back 04/01, but it won't let me do it. I'd try some more but I also had several memory dump crashes in between and I'm all worn out for tonight.
I am also suddenly getting a window saying "The system has recovered from a serious error", giving me the option to "send error report" or "don't send". I try to "don't send" and the window won't go away.
Where is our sinking ship graemlin?

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
Sounds to me like your hardware is failing. I really cant say for sure. If you have a WinXP cd you could try to backup your files then format and reinstall the OS but if it is a hardware problem this wont solve anything. Chances are with a dell you don't have a WinXP cd to reinstall the OS from but it don't hurt to ask.
If it is hardware you are probably better off just buying a used desktop. Once the hardware starts to go you can spend lots of money trying to troubleshoot the problem. Replace the hard drive and find out it was the ram, or the power supply, or a combination of the three. Without a few test boxes to test your equipment its just not feasible to test it yourself...and tech's are $35.00 an hour for troubleshooting....probably not worth it for a $300.00 pc.

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
Thanks Reby, I have a techie friend coming to the area the weekend of the 22nd, hopefully I can keep it running till then, I mainly want my pictures off. I don't have the money to fix this one or buy a new one, but I was eyeing those 200.00 laptops on Ebay. I don't want any more big computer taking up all this room in my little living room! A nice little laptop, will suffice.
I believe I do have the XP to re-install, so I'll prolly go that route once I retrieve my photos. It's worth a shot and can't do any harm. I'm gonna play with it some more tonight. Just trying my best to nurse this limping machine along!!

Re: OH OHHHHHHHH....
I don't think the hardware is failing, I think the problem is you file system is corrupted and memory space might be in short supply.
If you can avoid it you should never ask WinXp to Cache or use Restore Points.
You should use a backup of Microsoft backup to back up you data files to a non-destructible media off your computer that way if you have a problem you only need to re-install the operating system and the programs. Dell and other computer makers generally include a restore disk that will put you computer back to the store bought condition.
Outlook express don't have a an intuitive way to backup the email files and setting, but there are two manual ways to accomplish this and at least two more software out there that will help you to do this.
