Strange tings a gwaan! HELLLLP!!!!!!

Over the past 3 days, I have been having some seriously wierd problems online. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70367-help.gif[/img]

Right now I can post, but that may change at any time. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

Anyway, I open the browser and can navigate via links. When I attempt to use a drop down or type anything at all, it's as if my keyboard isn't attached to anything. The mouse will move the cursor to where I want it, but anything involving the keyboard just ain't happenin.
Also when I try to typr an email message, I'll be typing away and suddenly the typie stops and my cursor is somewhere where I didn't put it.
If I click back to where I was, I can continue typing, but it soon stops again.

Sooooo.... I ran AdAware SE, and a virus scan using McAfee.
Still no help. A couple of times, the AdAware stopped and the pc rebooted itself.

I use the MSN Premium browser. BUT I open up plain old IE and clear the temp files and cookies by going the tools/internet options route and that seems to clear it up.

Anybody have a clue as to what is causing this and how do I get rid of it??

Also do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and take a look at what may be running that you do not recognize and could be creating the problem.

Run > msconfig > startup. Look to see what program(s) that may be running in the background and causing memory conflicts. Un-click the box and re-boot the PC.

I do ctrl/alt/delete and check msconfig/startup every time I have a problem.
Nothing unusual. Two things I am not too sure of are
PtUDFApp and Em_Exec. But they are there more times than not and I don't have a problem..
Edited to add: One is for my CD burner, the other for my mouse.

Even after running the virus scan and AdAware, the problem only stops after I clean out the cache on IE. I know it's the base for the MSN browser, but I thought they ran seperately.
Maybe I should try Netscape again... or Foxfire? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

McAfee and MSN Messenger (It runs with the browser)
I keep running stuff to as little as possible. This poor old girl is 6 years old and has logged a LOT of mileage. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70361-embarassed.gif[/img]

If I ctrl/alt/delete I see all of my McAfee stuff, the Mouse (Logitec trackball) The usual load qm, explorer, Systray, Stimon.

Same thing again this morning and again when I got home from work.
Once I delete all the cookies and temp files from IE, I'm good to go.
I'll do a scan disk and defrag this evening, I did a full system virus scan when I first noticed the problem a few days ago. No viruses were detected.
When I run AdAware, it finds a couple of Data Miner files and I delete them.

BTW, Ja.com is my home page, pop ups are blocked and this happens before I ever get a chance to even log into J.com.

You can also check what's in your startup:

Start > Run > Msconfig

Now look at the startup tab. Posting the details listed there may help sort out the culprit.

I can log on and reply for a while then it acts up again.
Sometimes sooner than later.
So I log off and delete all the temp files and cookies.
When I get back online it's fine.

Q, I think you should run Scan Disk. Run the "Thorough" session NOT the "Standard".

How much hard disk space you have remaining? Also, whats the size of your virtual memory?

All else fails, you may need to un-install and re-install your browser.

Ok, s things have been quiet. I occassionally clear the temp files and cookies and that seems to keep things in good running order.

NOW... my cd burner, also several years old. It wouldn't recognize a blank cd. It will read a cd, but can't see a blank.
So I check the drivers, they seem to be ok. I tried reinstalling the program and now it won't even start up. I get an Illegal error message! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img]

I did a scan disk and a defrag. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. I have taken unused programs off my hard drive to free up disk space as well as deleted many music files.

Its really hard to say what's going on. Something has worked its way onto your system but what I cant say. Not to sound harsh but...You are at a point that you need to decide is it worth screwing with that pc over and over, or if should you just wipe the hard drive and reinstall the os and start over (of course after you backup essential data).

If I remember right that sony $rootkit$ could also disable your cdr's, it could read cd's but not write (what a bunch of wanks eh?)...dunno if that's the case here but anything is possible.

Anyway you can try going into the device manager and remove your cd burner, then exit device manager and reboot pc. When windows comes back up it should detect new hardware and either auto install or prompt you for drivers.

Up until ecently the burner was working fine.
I'd love to back up my data, but I can't burn it onto cd's.
I have LOTS of photos that I was going to burn when I discovered the problem. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img]

That's the only thing holding me back from formatting and starting over.
That and the fact that it takes forever to get an idiot at verizon to help me reinstall the DSL stuff... it has issues with 98, so it's not a DIY kinda installation. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

Its ok QK, we've all been there and its quite frustrating. Keep your chin up, it'll get better. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70392-silly.gif[/img]

Calling dsl support was a bad idea hehe, the tier 1 support guys are dumb as a box of rocks and cant go off their scripts.

Anyway like I said above try removing the hardware from your device manager to completely remove it from your system. Then you can reboot and try to reinstall the burner so you can do your backups.

Remember that when you bring the pc back online to not connect to the internet until after you've installed a firewall, anti-virus, spybot, adaware. Last month I formatted my parents pc and forgot my own rule. Within 2 minutes of connecting that box to the net/network the box was already infected.... argh! Quite annoying [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

I went through about 4 of thos "box o rocks" before someone finally said, "Oh yah. 98 has issues and we can work around it..." He had me up and running in about 20 minutes. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]
