cpu fan

JKid/Rebycam or any of you more knowledgable puter peeps, can you tell me why the fan on my cpu has started running for approximately 1 minute every 3-5 minutes?

somehow i have a feeling this is NOT a good thing.

How old is the PC, and have you changed anything on it lately?

Did you notice the PC doing that last Summer? Also do you run your air conditioner in your house when the PC is turned on? Is this a desktop or laptop PC?

no, JKid, i do not run the air conditioner -- unless i am cleaning the house ... then i turn it on high and strip .... oops, back to the topic.

i was thinking it was the hot weather, but this did not happen last year.

Well on the newer desltop PC's over the last few years there is a temperature sensor inside the case on the motherboard. This helps to regulate the fan on and off operation and save energy, by not running the fan constantly. Depending on the room temperature or the flow of air around the PC (you may need to clear away junk from around it), will determine how often the fan will cycle on and off. Some PC also have power on demand function. Which means, the CPU will use less wattage (heat dissipation) and cycle less, when you are doing light work on it (say, like word processing), but when you are doing more processor intensive workload (like graphic, things that require calculation or have many windows open with other peograms runing in the background), then the fan will cycle more frequently because the processor is using more power.

ty, sweet one .. i actually do believe it is temperature related. the cycling has slowed down as the evening comes on.

It mean you need to vaccium it. dust buildup usually cause heat retention due to the insulating effects of the dust. just take of the case and use the corner tool of yoy VC and give it a good run. Just don't let the tool touch anything inside it.

Boy I am glad to see this post because my pc has a fever [img]/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]! It started from last week wen it woke me up in the middle of the night...the system alarm went off. I just switched it off and went back to bed. This morning mi get up an di tower hot like fire. Mi pull it out from under the desk where it lives and tek off the side casing. Mi try fi remove some a di dust bunnies from around the fan blades and mi set mi own fan fi cool it down which it now seems to be doing. I checked all the fans and they are moving so why wasn't it cooling the tower before?

Your PC case temp sensor could be going bad or it has a build up of crud around it.
