On this site I can't see the pic at the top of the screen and on another site those dyam little X boxes are all over where my avatar should be and where the smiley faces usually appear, etc. I don't know very much about computers and have tried a few things, but I am afraid I will do more to the computer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: How do I get rid of the X Boxes?
First, some questions:
Where is your PC, at home or at work?
Are you behind any kind of firewall (hardware or software kind)?
What operating system are you using and what version?
Did you always have this issue, if not, when did it start?

My computer is a new HP Pavilion Laptop dv5000.
I don't have any firewalls.
I am using Windows XP.
It started a couple of weeks ago. I ignored it and went on a vacation, but now it's bugging me. I hope I answered your questions correctly. As you can tell I am very ignorant of the technical workings of a computer. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: How do I get rid of the X Boxes?
Sounds like you are blocking images from sites other than the current domain. If you are using firefox go into Tools > Options > Select Content Tab > and uncheck the box that says "for the originating website only".
If that don't fix it reply and tell us what web browser you are using. Hmm also check and see if you have java turned off.

Re: How do I get rid of the X Boxes?
Sorry Reby, I don't even know what Firefox is. And under my tools/options/Content I have no box "for the originating website only".
I did check and I am using XP Media Center Edition, 2002 Version, Service Pack 2. Don't know if this is valuable info or not.

For IE browser:
Go under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Multimedia.
Look for and make sure that "Show image download placeholders" is unchecked, and "Show pictures" is checked.

I did this and it didn't work. I even restarted the computer and made sure the one was unchecked and Show Pics was checked and the problem is still there. I even had my son-in-law who knows computers lots better than I do and he couldn't figure it out.
Any more suggestions before I take it to a computer repair store?

Re: How do I get rid of the X Boxes?
1) Are the pictures showing OK in your AOL browser when you use it?
2) You may need to run a FREE anti-trojan, and ad-ware cleaner on your PC.
3) Do you have a pop-up blocker turned on in your browser or other software? Some have different levels of security to block different things.
4) One other thing, Win-XP SP2, gateway firewall may be blocking the graphics by default and you may need to allow access for it to come through.
5) Are you going through a router, or are you hooked just to a DSL/cable modem? Routers also have blocking functions, which combined with other software could be causing the issue. You need to isolate each to find the problem.
6) What anti-virus software are you using? Some come in suits, that also have blocking capabilities, in addition to protecting you from virus.

Re: How do I get rid of the X Boxes?
Thanks J-Kid and Rebycman. It was something in the Media section. When I unchecked it, the x boxes went away along with my user names and passwords, but that's okay. I just entered them again and it's working fine. Thanks for all your help. Whew! And thanks for putting up with a neophyte.
