Windows 7 Blackscreen of Death, need Help!

Hello, all you techies on here! I have a laptop (only 6 months old) with Windows 7. Last night I was on the laptop for a short time and it locked up in the browser and wouldn't close. I tried to ctrl, alt, del but nothing happens. The screen is now black and I see the mouse cursor which I can move. I can't shut the computer down or even reboot to try the safe mode or do some sort of registry cleaner or system restore. I don't know what to do. I've been on the net this morning trying to research some options but all options for the black screen thing involves rebooting.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm certainly not all that tech savvy, unfortunately, so please have patience with me.

I'd appreciate any help given, thank you so much!

Press the power button and <span style="font-weight: bold">hold your finger on it. </span> Do not release your finger pressure until it powers off completely. Let sit for about 30 seconds then press the power button to boot it back up again.

Unplug the laptop and disconnect the battery from the back.. Without power it will have to shut down.

You guys are awesome! We were able to power it down by holding the button and then we turned it back on after a period of time. It seems to be fine now...I'm so glad! I was afraid I would have to do some technical things. I may still have to so we'll see for now.

I'm so grateful to you guys! I didn't know I could power it down that way.

Ed, I've located this site that Prevx had posted with the fix previously but I just couldn't figure out how to get the laptop to shut down. But now it appears to be fine after the initial reboot. But I will print these instructions for future if it happens again and continues the black screen. Jeesh, I wonder if I should have just spend the extra money and purchased a Mac instead.

Use the search feature on the pc to find *.tmp and delete those files. Some you will not be able to delete.

On Win7, click on start and in the search box, type in *.tmp

A new window should pop up and you'll be able to delete the majority of them. The files that you can't delete are in use, so don't worry about them. Deleting those files assist in preventing the lockups.
