A Picture CD question for the Teckies!

I need some help! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70367-help.gif[/img]

I had a CD with about 300 pictures in .jpg format of various sizes. I gave the CD with the pictures to a friend with too much time on her hands [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] to re-size them and clean them up for use on a DVD I am putting together with music and for a Web Site I am working on.

I received back a CD with about 400 pictures on it as about 100 of them are the reduced size version. I was estatic to start working with them when problems got the best of me. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img]

I don't seem to be able to copy or move the pictures from the CD to my laptop. I realize there is a "read only" protection on the CD version of the pictures but for some reason I don't seem to be able to open the CD and work with them as planned.

Any Suggestions? What don't I know that I should about the process? Thanks in advance.

Make sure that the files that you are trying to move is not active in the RAM memory (you dont have it open the background).

Also right click on one of the files and go to properties > Security, and if you have full control to read and write.

I asseme that you did view the photos on your PC and not just see them on your friends PC only? If that is the case, are you sure you are trying to access a CD and not a DVD? Do you have dual DVD/CD reader installed?

If yuh still are having issues, have your friend un-lock the folder/files on their PC first, then re-burn you another CD.

J-Kid, thanks for the response but I don’t really understand what you said. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] I am no “computer geek” but I do understand the basics as I work with them daily. I am hoping that you or another reader can point out where I am going wrong so I am going to try to lay out the problem and see if you can help.

First of all, I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 9400 with a dual Centrino Processor with a GIG of RAM running Windows XP. It does have a dual DVD/CD R/W drive.

Here is what is happening:

I turn on computer and when windows is loaded, I insert the CD into the drive. On the “options” for action on the drive, I choose “Take no Action” and now I begin. I go to “My Computer” and select the D Drive to display contents. The CD has 4 folders each with about 85 pictures per folder. I then choose Folder 1 and the thumbnails of the pictures are displayed. All actions from here seem to take a very long time to complete or don’t complete at all. For instance, right-clicking on a thumbnail to get to “properties” brings up no response immediately and even after several minutes, nothing seems to happen. Occasionally, however, I do get to “properties” but when I select it nothing happens either.

Okay, so I try to “Copy to a Folder”. I go under “Pictures” on the C Drive and open a new folder and click on a thumbnail of a picture and initiate the process. A “preparing to copy” and then “copying to folder X” comes up and it appears to be working but then the dreaded Error Message. “Cannot Copy (Picture Selected) Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)” Whaaaa! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] Might as well said, “Can’t Copy because the sun is too bright” I am lost on that one.

I can seem to “view pictures as a Slide Show” with no problem.

I don’t want to make this too confusing so I will stop here for now and see if anyone can correct or advise me on how to accomplish my task. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/notworthy.gif[/img]

[img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img] In basic terms, it simply means that something is going wrong during the data transfer, and the source does not match destination. Data may be getting corrupted. It could be during your DVD/CD drive read (bad disk or drive issues). Does it sound like the drive is grinding and whirling (which would explain the long delay)? Put your ears close to the drive and see. Try cleaning the disk as well.


Take the disk to another PC, preferably a desktop, and see if you are experience the same exact problem. If you can duplicate the problem, then it is on your friend’s end that the problem exist. Could be a poorly burnt CD/DVD disk.

Also try copying pictures in the laptop from another known CD or DVD disk that is good, that you may have somewhere in your posession.

Thank you for your suggestions. I think I now know the problem. I re-inspected the CD she gave me and found a "dent" in the media. I am not too sure on how it got there but realized that I didn't have these problems at first but only lately after the damage must have occured.

No problem that is what I am here for, to help where I can. You really made the process painless by providing as much information as you did. Not everyone who ask questions here understand that point, even though it has been stressed on several occasions. Bottom-line is, you helped me to help you, and that is a great thing.

You also cracked me up with the comical way that you phrased certain things which, helps to bring some humor to what is usually a very dull subject to a lot of people. That is what i have tried to do from the start of this forum, bring sum humor and light-heartedness to the perceived boring subject of Technology.
