hehe yeah searching google for those keywords will get you about 20 billion pages. What I'd suggest is finding a local company that offers web services and page/site design. You should probably sit down and get the basic site layout designed in paper then find scripts to do what you want the site to do. There are thousands and thousands of free scripts out on the net, I often use www.hotscripts.com to find new tools/toys.

This will give you an idea of what code you will be using for your site. Until you decide the code you cant really do anything with a web host. Otherwise you may end up with a host that cant host your php site/script since they don't do php...or whatever.

Just so you know, most ISP's also offer website hosting so you can also check those but try to stick with something local. Its very frustrating to try to design a site for a customer via email and makes getting your desired result/site much harder.

Commerce how detailed?
Do you want to take cards/paypal/shopping cart?
Are you going to maintain it yourself?
Do you want free or how much do you want to pay?

Good morning Tuff Gong. I don't need anything real fancy, either a slideshow or flash pics on the front maybe a little music, some text & links.

I haven't looked into visa/amex/mc yet but yes a shopping cart for some of the items.

Yes, I need to be able to maintain it myself as items will change regularly. The free webshosting is enticing but I wonder at the page load time of them. I don't want to have people waiting half a day even if they happen to be on dial up. Hmm, I see some for under $5.00 a month that claim to be fast loading, but I guess that's why I came here, I don't want to go through all the work and find out I'm sitting on a slow as hell site.

I'm baaack! Thought I'd reply about a few things. First off you mentioned flash, do you know how to do flash? If not then I'd probably stick with static images like .gif or .jpg. Another thing to consider is what if your customer doesnt have flash installed on their computer? They will either have to download and install flash or your site wont work, neither are very good options for a new user to your site. So try to make your site work on as many computers as possible (and its good to think about this right up front before you start mucking around with scripts and site design).

I don't really know your experience level but from the sounds of it you have some experience. What I'd suggest is .asp scripts since they are easier for newer developers to use.

Now since you want to take credit cards the best suggestion I have for you is a business paypal account. There are many scripts that work with paypal that give you a shopping cart, credit card payments, and can be customized for your needs. The only drawback is like flash your users would have to have a paypal account to use your e-store.

Thanks Reby, great stuff to know about the shopping cart, I already have a paypal account but was thinking shopping cart to make it easier for the customers to do a one stop shop as long as they're in a buying mood and make it easy for them.

I'd really rather have a rotating main page photo if I can but the main thing is I want the pages to load fast so maybe it's a trade off. I visit a lot of sites that I don't ever even see, I usually move on if they're slow. Me here with a 40K connection is sensitive about that.

I'll look into the .asp scripts, but I'm also leaning towards a template site simply for the reason that I don't want to spend a whole bunch of time learning scripts cause I'm buried in other work right now, but I'll look into it for sure! I appreciate your helpful input!

For paid services I would use this site to choose from a Web Hosts:

Most of these Hosts are e-Commerce ready so all you would need to do is to get setup with a card(s) service(s).

PayPal has a shopping cart feature that you can add to most sites. You can do rollovers and moving images by using editors such as:
