Magic Jack

a coworker from Kingston told me "every one in Jamaica has a Majic Jack now"

I'm going to get rid of my land line in Florida and get a Magic Jack. If I went to Jamaica could I use the Magic Jack with a cheap net book? Obviously I would need internet access.

I used to have Magic Jack. As a primary line it didn't work too well for me ( lots of static on calls).

My family in JA has it and it works well for overseas calls. Knowing the issues with call quality I would recommend Magic Jack as a secondary line (used infrequently as my parents use it ....for foreign calls)

But maybe Magic Jack has gotten better, as it has been a few years now since I cancelled it and switched to Vonnage.

That is funny. I had problems with Vonage (frequent connectivity issues, billing practices etc)

The quality of the magic jack is dependent on the quality of your internet connection. Is it worth it? Maybe. I have one. For the $20 I can call anywhere in the US from anywhere in the world, but again, it depends on my internet access. I haven't gotten rid of the land line yet because I haven't a found a 'reasonable' magic jack type replacement. They are still $100+ to not use the pc and plug in to the router directly. That way I don't need to have the pc on. Net Talk looks promising, but they are a small company.

One of my cousins always call via Magic Jack... her number shows as if she's calling from 954 area code.
