lol thanks Banadana, there's about 1,200 hghi res pics and uploading to photobucket really isn't an option with slow dial up. It's looking like I'm goinna lose them....

J Kid about this disk you are talking about, now I'm confused.
I've got 3 disks here:

Operating system: Reinstallation CD Windows XP home edition

Application Backupell Installed programs

Drivers & utilities: for reinstalling service drivers and using diagnostics, utilities and online documentation

Is one of these what you're talking about?

From what I am finding on the net, XP is different when re-formating and re-installing... See this link

I had Win2000 and had no problems...

What I did was insert my windows disc and then re-boot...

The computer recognized the windows disc and asked if I wanted to re-install or repair... I picked re-install and it installed my windows os...

Then I had to re-install internet software, go to the windows website and install all the updates (takes hours on dial-up [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img] )then re-install all of my other software, printer, etc...

P.S.
You can get viruses and spyware from webpages with out opening a thing if you do not have virus protection [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Before you do anything, get yourself an external USB hard drive and move all your valuable data to it.

...god I hope you don't have to lose your photos. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70384-praying.gif[/img] I have only one suggestion....If you do happen to get it up and running without having to dump everything, uninstall your Norton junk and download AVG FREE. I have dial-up and an old slow processor, which gave me nothing but bizaare unexplicable problems and pop-ups due, I believe, to the demands required by norton. I would spend days sorting stuff out, operating in the safe mode,calling tech support, getting into dos, resetting the system back to an earlier time,and everything else. Even today my scandisk doesn't work properly, but my computer is running faster than ever and nothing gets past AVG except the massive amount of spyware attached to THIS site....hang in there, Nan, good luck!

I'll definitely get an external hard drive if I try anything fancy, I don't want to lose my best hig res photographs, the low res aren't a consolation prize atall. I might have run across a solution to try too.

Thanks TD, I'm mostly bumming about the photos but now that I hear if I decide to scrap the whole works I'll put all the stuff I can't live without in the new hard drive when I can get one and hopefully be able to continue communication with the world outside the tundra. It's almost hibernating time and this machine is then about it!

Hi TG, nope, that was something else different, somehow I made it out of that one unscathed, but this time I might not be so lucky, it seems. This machine is no cat, ie: 9 lives.
