mi wi nevah buy a tosh-i-ba again i had two which came down to madda board problems, needed to be replaced an de coss a de ting might as well get a nex one, de 3rd one still a roll nice an slow suh mi geet tuh smaddy who could still use it.

now, the repair window did say that the laptop may restart several times during the process. but once it shut off, that sucker was off.

lil skinny, it's a toshiba, but will have to wait till next week to supply the model number, seeing as mi only have computer access at work now. </div></div>

If it still do it with the battery removed, then it probably overheating, or it has malware. The repair is automatically done when you power off windows. (or when it shutoff itself.) On next reboot, it normally attempts to 'repair' the hard drive, but there is some malware out there that will shutdown the machine while it's trying to repair. I still tend to think it's overheating though. Relatively simple fix for someone that is mechanically inclined. Basically get to the CPU, clean up the dried up heat sink compound, put new compound on and it should be back working if that's the problem. The heat sink compound helps to transfer heat to the heat sink. When it dried up, the machine automatically shuts down to prevent damage.

When you find the model number, we can google it and see if that's the issue.

Mi agree, Toshiba's laptops are crap. Dem built really low quality. Mi family memba hav wan an di screen panel quit some time ago.

Lin, i think it is a overheating problem. I had it on for about a minute and the ting was so hot, and with each successive attempt to restart, it shut off quicker and quicker, caw it was still hot.. just noticed that this weekend.

looked for the model number but couldnt id it among all di blasted numbers on the bottom of the laptop.

I want to try that thing u said, but would hope to be able to have pic of all that from google.

or, as dajah said, start shop for another laptop.

Mgee if you have a camera u can tek a pic of the the numbers and such and post it- from there one of the guys can make out the model number and try help you out

Toshiba Model No. PSLC8C-0380IR (not sure if that penultimate digit is the upper case letter I or the number 1)

ETA - it's the number 1. Also, according to some internet anecdotes, Windows 7 mitigates the overheating problem.

Very few hits on the model number posted. Check if the fan running and not caked up with lint. Can't find much on the unit at all. On the more popular laptops you can find disassemble instructions and such. Can't even get any hits on a service manual. Time to decide if you want a new one or if you want to repair it.

Getting to the CPU on most laptops takes quite a bit of work. You generally start with the battery, drives, trim above the keyboard, the keyboard, screen and then the base. You have to be very careful with the tiny ribbon cables and other tiny wires. Other than that, once you get to the cpu is usually surrounded by some piping that directs and routes air around the cpu and cpu heat sink. Remove that assembly, the dried up heat sink compound, then add new one.

McGee I have aToshiba laptop as well and it started overheating and shutting down a few months ago (not after 2 minutes though) - it has Windows Vista and I've had it since September 2008 - It has really been a good laptop and I haven't had any issues with it aside of when it started overheating and shutting down - but a laptop pad with a fan fixed that problem - no shutdown since then.
