It's actually pretty safe, IF you pay attention to what you're downloading. I've been using it for years. Of course, ensure your virus scan is updated too.
In a nutshell, everybody acts as both a server and client. you allow others to get the bits and pieces of what you have, and you get bits and pieces of what they have. If you're missing some, you can get those pieces from many people, thus making the download faster.
As for security. Most of the clients I've played with startup on boot. I disable that because I want to choose when the program is used, and when people can take stuff off my pc. That is when I'm sitting in front of it. Why do I care? In order for others to download stuff from your pc, ports are opened up. If ports are opened, knowledgeable people have access to your pc. If you have a software firewall, you can open or close the ports as you use the program. Paranoid? Maybe, but if you're not paranoid nowadays when surfing the web, it is pretty easy to get crap on your pc. I now surf with javascript turned off. It is a bit of a pain, but it's also safer. Easy to reactivate in chrome if I need it. -

Most of them are pretty easy to use. Monitor the files that you find and examine the name closely before downloading. Some of them have some pretty good fake names and if you're not careful, you'll download a virus executable or zip file.Comment
