What is a 'wifi dongle' and how is it used? Is it any different from a wifi unit? Is it something that uses a specific device?

ah..wait dey... i think i know what this is... had it in Chile last year... it's the flash drive looking usb thing that plugged into the flash drive...it picked up nearby wireless router.

ok... now that I realize what this is I remember having trouble with it when a nearby wireless router was not available. I could not quite figure out the difference between this and picking up someone else's non-secured wifi signal.
