Same here but some routers don't get on the first time. Some cable companies share IP so it confuses the Router every time there is a switch. Some IPs needs to see a specific MAC, (most often DSL), so it is a wise idea to tell the Router to Clone the MAC of the Modem.
It is most important to hook the router up to the Cable Modem before hooking up the Computer.
So you plug the Cable Modem in. Plug the Router sans any other connections but the one to the CM and the Power.
The Router will then take a few seconds to access the WANIP from the CM.
You then hook the computer to the router.
You then log into Router and set that up for Wireless and passwords if you choose.
All or most home routers operate on the default
IP 192.168.1.1
Most Home routers the default password is:
default
admin
or no passwords
When you get into the router have it clone the:
MAC Address
Use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to deliver the Internet address.
While in the box you can have router refresh itself just in case it did not get the correct WAN IP the first time.
On you computer make sure you set it to use (DHCP)
If you are having problems of losing the signals after a few weeks you can go back to the Router choose an IP from the number of available ones issued by the Router, then lock your computer on that IP.
