Neighbours with WiFi

I have noticed an ever increasing number of my neighbours using unsecured wifi connections.

I have been tempted to get rid of my internet service and just <span style="text-decoration: line-through">steal</span> use their connections. tonight I see a new connection that was set up.

I see one called JadeCat (secure enabled connection) and then right underneath that on the list I see another connection called JadeCat - Guest (unsecured connection)

The fact that they make it known that the connection is for guest does that make it alright to use that connection. If so then I just might cancel my internet service.

Anyone here use someone else's connection on a regular basis?

Is it a criminal offense if you get caught?

I think it being a criminal offense would be very very very murky for piggy backing off an unsecured wifi connection

Sometimes it is a restaurant or business offering their guest free access (like say Tim Horton's). They sometimes have a similar named access, but secured for their business use only. However, yuh never know!

I think the biggest risk is the security of your personal information. If you do use it, DON'T do banking, or things like that on it. Just use it for general browsing.

Libraries also will have free access, if you are close to one, as well as, some municipalities.

It's a criminal offense, depending on on the context. There have been cases where freeloaders have been charged. Would &gt;you&lt; be charged? As a home user, unlikely, but that's a risk only you can decide.

I agree with the above. If you hack in, that's a different thing.

I don't think it's illegal to use an unsecured WiFi source even if you're just a stranger passing through.

I can sit outside Doc's Atlanta all the live long day and not buy so much as a cup of tea and use their connection They may not like it, but I can do it with no fear of retribution.

Several cases that I'm aware of where the freeloaders got arrested. The key is knowingly used an unsecured connection.
