Photoshop HELP

Can anyone help me with a small detail?? im not so familiar with photosshop

i have a non square image formatted to make a square.. i must use the bucket tool to fill in the white columns on other side with black.. but when i dump the color it goes on the image too... ????? how do i get it just to go on the white part?

Well not sure what version of PS ya got but what is happening is you are filling the entire image (as a layer). What you need to do is use something like the magic tool to select the area you want to fill, then fill it. That should make it fill just your selected area and not the entire image.

thanks let me go find out what the magic tool is... i am not familiar with photoshop... i have the newest version on my laptop... but elements on my desktop.. using that right now..

You can crop your photo to the size you want it using the crop tool. Then you can place it on a mat the color that you want to have it on... like a mat. You do that by you see those two colored squares on top of eachother in the tool bar? Click the one on the right, and choose a color that you like. Then go to "rotate canvas", that is in the "Image" tool bar at the top ther next to File Edit Image. you click rotate canvas and then "arbitrary." Usually 3 or 4 is a good setting for a mat. click clockwise, and then counter clockwise. Then save your image using a new name like bestphoto2.jpg so you have the original still there. Plus remember that you can always Go Back using the tab in Edit.

((thanks forty.)).. got way frustrated.. opened another edit program.. Corel.. and did what i needed much easier same method... i

ll come back to you because i want to learn on photoshop( you have msn im?) ... im not so much into editing beyond simple adjustments but when i send them in to places they ask for specific requirements.. one wants 300 pixels, another 72.. and so forth... be back.. must keep working.. lol

To learn PS try a simple google search and you'll find thousands upon thousands of tutorials out on the net. In the old days you needed to take a class or buy a book...nowdays ya just google it, there is a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips.

Note: Just make sure you figure out what version of PS ya got so you arent looking at PS 5.5 tut's when you have PS 8 [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif[/img]

Photoshop is one cool toy (once ya figure out the basic's). There are so many ways to use PS that you'll get 3-6 different answers depending on what you are doing. Anyway sit down and play with some PS tut's, that's how I learned (just have fun!).

Ive got to agree with Rebycman BND.

Id be delighted to give you a hand any way that I can. Photoshop is such a killer program... it has changed EVERYTHING. I would guess that PhotoShop is probably a two semester course at university now... maybe more. The program is HUGE. Im going to have to get a camera that makes files in RAW format. Gigantic files with detail and even more ways to manipulate what you end up with [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

Yes it is and amazing program. I should have invested in Adobe back in the early 90s. I would be a wealthy man today.

I know most people are way into these editing programs... i just havent been.. I shoot.. and at the most i add contrast or darken/brighten........ change the resolution or final size..

but now when being asked to do something in a certain format i flipped when i could only get so far... and i see that i need to be a little bit more educated ..

im sure PS i have CS2 and elements is an incredible program.. ill search out some links.. but i do think id like a class.. wish we could all get together..

thanks for the support.. im glad i got it in corel.. because i had a deadline...... just dont know why corel dumped the bucket only on the white borders.. and ps did it even on teh photo partially.. only thing i can figure is that the image had a lot of fog around the subject.. wonder if it saw that as white... hmmmm

What you need to do is isolate the area you want to fill with colour (otherwise you'll end up filling your entire canvas with that colour when using the bucket tool). You do this by using the marquee tool (shortcut is M). Drag a box around the area you want to fill with colour. Choose the bucket tool and click the isolated area.
