Mic that digitizes the voice

I've been noticing that a lot of singers lately are using a mic that seems to digitize their voice. It's quite annoying, but i'm wondering if others are hearing what I'm hearing.

Why do i ask? Billy Joel sang the US Nat'l Anthem and it was obvious that that wasn't his natural voice. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif[/img]

Well Stevie Wonder was the pioneer of that in the 70's.

Well it;s a little different. He was SUPPOSED to sound like his voice was digitized...but this new thing, if the person holds one note, it "blends in" with the voice but when they move to another note, the digitization doesn't follow.

Now listen when he sings "Oh say can you see" and you;ll hear it on the "see" and "by" and "proudly."

Can you hear the digitization...it doesn't keep up with his voice on some of the notes...

There's no digitization of the mic or his voice.
There are not that many digital mic's out there. Most all use an analogue path. But there are nuff digital pieces put between the mic and the recorder or what ever medium they are using to bring it to you. Like how nuff tv nowadays a disitize dem broadcyaas maybe dat is wah yuh tink yuh hearing.

You don't hear it, but I do. I hear it all through the song "Turn Me On" by Kevin Lyttle. (sp?) I have been hearing it quite a bit lately, recorded as well as live.

Maybe I have some weird dog-ear gene thing going on, but i hear something besides the voice there. ...oh well...it's not THAT important

fi real doe my hearing pix up tings dat moas don't cause they've been trained to listen like that. i even hear when a drummers stick barely brush de mic. It sounds simple but it was on beat so moas nevva hear it. I kept on playing de song over and over again mi all ask other producers if they hear it. Nobody hear it till I tek out oneside a de song adn eq the bass out and the mids up and boom everybody could now hear it.

Maybe oneday yuh cyan show me wah yuh tink ya hear. And if yuh have dat kind of hearing maybe you should be a recording engineer. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

The transmission is now digital instead of analog in many markets. It will be completely digitized by th eend of 2008. So your ear will either have to get use to it or .....

There is a difference between analog and digital harmonics processing. However, I think what you may be hearing is the open-air bounce, and audio signal bends as it travels through air. I don't think you are getting a direct feed from his microphone to the TV audio equipment.

There are a few people that can hear the difference between tube amp, and transistor/IC amps signal processing. Are you old enough to have experienced tube amp sound reproduction?

I was given a tube amp a while back, and played around with it. The tubes circuitry process, and replicate the audio signal much more natural sounding than transistors circuitry does.

I know some singers these days can't sing, so they depend heavily on signal processing (filters, equalization, high music volume and bass) in the studio as cover to compensate. Consequently they sound terrible when heard live. Likewise, you have some singers like Neo(sp), Luther, Brian McKnight, Baby Face, etc, who can sing without musical accompaniment and sound great.

I don't think it's the reception from the tv..though it could be. I guess I only hear it on tv, but i don't go out to many concerts.

I;ll try to describe it...when the person sings and goes from one note to another, sometimes they "slide" to that note (meaning singing the note then the "notes" in between the next note on the scale. When they do that, the synthesizer just goes from the one note to the next on the scale and you can hear the TONE but it's not the voice of the person doing it. maybe I'll never find out.
