Mi jus get a hp pavillion dv205us laptop and de iddy dem ongle put 512 megs a ram pan de ting wehn Vista recommend 1GB. Friend a mine tell mi seh mi can get an SD mem card but mi nuh sure wish one fi get. Mi a try buy it from http://www.buy.com cause mi like dem ova dere

I haven't that much experience with LapTops but from what I know you would want small form factor Memory Modules.
Look on eBay for:

SODIMM Memory.

Type SODIMM, (your laptop model/name)

If I understand you correctly, you want to use SD memory as RAM?

It is not the same kind of memory, SD is mostly for storage, kind of like a removable hard drive. I know, on some smaller electronics units like PDA's and cell phones they make it appear as if they are running the software from the SD. What you need is to add more RAM memory stick. either two 521MB, or one 1GB memory stick.

No. You are talking about apples and oranges. The SD circuitry is wired in differently than RAM. One is basically for storage and the other is for processing (working memory).

SD card will not increase your working memory. computers has 2 types of memory it has a sequential memory or storage memory which is the class the SD card, hard drive,dvd,CD/ROM etc is in, and a working memory working memory is always random access memory or RAM.
every bit of data stored in sequential memory have to be transfered to random access memory to be read by the computer. the reason whi vista needs 1 gig is that although it works less than that. It has to read a part of the OS then dtransfer the othr part to the ram to read. that takes up more time and reduce the efficiency of the system.
itGo to http://www.belarc.com and analyse your machine. it will tell you if the RAM can be upgraded,which more than likely it can. you will probably have to but 1 gig instead of another 512 megs,though,because they usually put in 2 256 megs,instead of 1 512 megs,because the latter cost much more. ..and you have to have the same size ram in each slot,or the machine will be as slow as the slowest slot.

Ithink he is talking about his LapTop in which case he needs as I said:

SODIMM Memory

In fact his friend possibly shortened the acronym to SD, not meaning the SD Card but the Small Form Factor Memory Module.

I had a Dell LapTop once and I upgraded the memory to 512 with a SODIMM module.
I still have the modules and I am certain that at least some of the new LapTops still use them.

You better have somthing else in which you can use it,because it won't do what yoy wsnt' Nothing but the right piece of memorywill work,and memory stick is just like the SD ram. It is a storage memory,and you need aditional working memory.

I'll chime in and maybe clear up some confusion others may have. Really all you need to do to upgrade memory is determine what motherboard you have (often the mfg like HP knows what ya need if you tell them ya bought the DV205US). Once you know what motherboard you have you can just google the model # and you'll see spec's that tell you exactly what RAM is supported.

For you I can say the default memory is 512MB DDR2 SDRAM so in order to upgrade your memory you'd want another identical stick of ram, but before you buy make sure you have an extra ram slot available on your motherboard. If you don't have 2 slots for DDR2 ram then you'd have to buy 1gb of DDR2 ram and pull the 512 and plug in your 1gb stick. This leaves you with an extra 512mb stick to sell/use/trade/whatever.

I am kinda scratching my head here about the so-called confusion
LapTops use DIMM, except the space is so small in some LapTops that they have compacted the DIMMs to a smaller form factor hence:

SODIMMs

Typically you install them by swing open the keyboard and popping the Module in the slot.
Now I don't want to sound like an expert @ anything but my two instance have been with a Dell and an Apple LapTop.

Now some manufactures my design their boards to accept regular

DIMMs

in which case all you have to do is to determine the model and search for memory upgrades for such.

Anytime you order from a site like he posted its easy for the average user to get confused, so now he knows how to look it up. As far as 'all laptops use SODIMM ram' well what about next month, or next year? You sure ALL laptops use that memory? See what I mean?

I am 99% sure I did not, would not and could convey the impression that all LapTops use

SODIMMs.

I explained the circumstances under which I came to determine that @ least two LapTops use:

Okay, I got the memory stick. This badboy is working so much faster now. I now have 1.5GB of ram so it's sweet. Thanks for all the help y'all. God Bless
