what do you find works the best for you ?

I have a desktop and two notebooks. I use Norton on the desktop and one notebook. One the other notebook I use ESET NOD 32. I prefer Norton.

AVG have a free version, but you got the trial version. Dunno if you can remove the trial and go back to free. Something to test in 30 days. Anything is better than nothing.

Norton got worse before it got better. Some versions when active, made a noticeable impact on either surfing or operational speed. Avast is another free one. Make sure you don't install the tool bar from any of them. One should always use custom and uncheck some of the crap that gets loaded. All those toolbars use memory and slow down the computer. I've mentioned the Rogue anti-virus here already. So far, none of the Anti-Virus programs I know have been able to eliminate it once it gets on your pc. It actually shuts down the well known Anti-virus programs. Malwarebytes will work to a point to remove it, but not always.

Anti-virus is as good as the person using the machine. What works best is safe surfing habits. But even then, sometimes just mis-typing a URL can get crap on the pc.

Virtual pc works great too. You can install any of the free anti-virus in the virtual machine and run that. If you screw it up, just copy the virtual file back over and you back in business. Compare copying the file to reloading the computer. I also surf with JavaScript turn off. Sure it makes finding stuff a little slower, but I also get to pick and choose which websites get to run Java.

It was a toss between AVG and Avast free versions, I hadnt read good things about Norton over the past couple years, but they seem to be getting better.

I realize that none of them are iron clad, thankfully I have the re-install disk in sight. reinstall and partition wasn't quite as painful as I remembered.

I did a custom install of AVG but apparently it went and installed the toolbar even though I declined I havent seen it though

I have always used the free AGV.

Never had an issue.
