possible problem with network adapter?

My dell laptop since this a.m. is not picking up internet connection. my primary laptop is connected to the internet...the other laptop laptops in the house wifi picks up off the primary laptop.

the dell, when i look in the devices settings for network, it showing the network adapter as 'not connected'. the wireless adapter is proset and it is picking up other network/wifi in the neighbourhood. when i go into the profile, and select for my wifi profile name, it is not connecting. nothing changed between today and yesterday.

just now i did a ping 127.0.0.1 and it gave good packets sent and received. when i do an ipconfig, it say "media disconnected". mi nuh know what is going on wid it today...

a di network adapter gone bad?

when i run the ipconfig it says...

ethernet adapter wireless network connection
media state....... media disconnected

the wifi is picking up other people's secured signal such as 2wire715 and 2wire813. why isn't it going to my home profile as it normally would...? also, why it is *not* connecting to the profile when I select connect?

Did yuh try rebooting, den teconnecting? Also check to see if yuh accidentally turned off power to di card.

Plug in a cable and see if the laptop connects to the internet. All you're doing there is verifying that the laptop can connect, even though you're not using the WiFi.

Next check to see if the WiFi card is 'enabled' in the network connecton. You can also try to disable and enable it. If it doesn't work, then you could try manually connecting to the WiFi network again. Usually there are two WiFi managers on the pc. If you inadvertently changed something, you could have switched between one or the other. One will have your password to the WiFi, the other may not.

I'm a little confused when you say the other laptops connect off the other. Are you using that laptop to <span style="font-style: italic">share</span> the internet connection?

LinSkinny and Jkid... this is the strangest of strangest...

I did everything you both said but to no avail, here at home the laptop would not connect to the internet. Sake a that, I had to go into the office---I left home thinking maybe it is a problem with my router and not the laptop. I got to the office, login to corporate network but for some strange reason.... mi couldn't even access nutten over the corporate intranet. Very strange. Called helpdesk.. One guy came and mussi work at it for 3+ hrs. He left and said &quot;Your network adapter is dead. It has gone bad. The network adapter is built onto the motherboard. You will have to call Dell for support.&quot; Mi sey ok, look like this is a dead piece then but something kept nagging at me... and that is the router at home.

Got home the same evening I made the posts above and I spent 4 hrs at it. I did everything you both said and more. I noticed the wifi was picking up wifi secured enabled signals. One predominantly name 2wire###. Strange, if the network adapter is not working then why was it picking up wifi signals? I kept at it, uninstall/reinstall the device driver... still no luck. Then I went to my router. Reset it. I got curious about what was 2wire###... logged into my router utility software. Well, guess what... 2Wire### IS me! So why it defaulted to 2Wire and not my 'jamaica' name? All along I was trying to my jamaica profile name for the router but somehow that was no longer workable and everything got defaulted to 2Wire### profile.

I went back to the laptop, did a new profile setup for the wifi to connect to 2wire, entered the wireless password and voila! I could google.com. Double voila.. I got into the corporate vpn! So how come corporate helpdesk guy spent 3 hrs at it and came off that my network adapter was dead as a door nail? And why even after logging into corporate network (at the office) I could not access the intranet?

I do not know how but just glad that the network adapter is functional and I can get access. Friday mi go inna di office and triple voila... I could access the intranet. I think the root problem was with my router.

I have a yard name for my router too

anyway been having issues with my router losing connection cho mi cant even badda chobbleshoot it yah now the way mi tired

bout 2 weeks now been having the issue \0/

Glad to hear you got it fixed.

If the laptop shares the connection as the 'gateway' it can slow the speed for the other machines connecting to it. It's a setting when you configure the network connection. You can 'share' the router without using the laptop as a gateway and that's probably what you're doing. I doubt a corporate laptop would allow you do share any network connection. That's a huge security hole, but then again, the security is as good as the person (or team) responsible for network security.

My primary laptop is connected to the router for internet access. all the other laptops establish internet access via the wifi secured signal in the house. In terms of my corporate laptop, i have to establish a wifi connection for internet access before i can get into the corporate gateway. I work with a global telecom company and their corporate vpn is very secured. corporate global network doesn't allow sharing...

That sound more normal. It was how you had worded it previously that had me confused. No worries though.

Update on this... Confirmed that the network adapter built onto the motherboard is bad. This means ethernet cable connection will not work.

Regardless of a bad network adapter, the laptop will pick up a wifi signal.

The other day I found the docking station. At work I use the docking station connected to laptop. So I am good!
