Extending a wireless network

I have this wireless modem/router that teefin bell send me so I've had to change up a few tings, so mi waan kno if i can take my original router and put it downstairs to receive the signal of this modem/router and extend the network.
What I'd like to do is have it in the studio for when ppl come over they can link to that one.
How can I do this if it is possible?

yes it can be done with a wireless repeater.. businesses do it all the time to boost signal in offices & such.

The one I have is from a company called engenius

mi not sure of the model number. The instructions were not the greatest but it can get set up. I would suggest having one of your it friends set it up

ohhh so I have to buy sittin else, mi cyaan jus use de nex router mi have yasuh weh a guh sit idle fi a while?

dont think you can connect one router directly to another router.. unless that router has the ability to just act like a repeater

Look up <span style="font-weight: bold">cantenna</span> and see if that helps. There are also ways of using a beer can to boost the signal 2-4dbs. (and yes you get to drink the beverage too, lol)

I have one of the eGenious routers. It works, but since I move it around to different places, it can be a bit finicky sometimes.

Another possibility is setting up a switch. All a switch does is give you more ports to plug into. The switch will get the IP from the original router. Some switches act as DHCP servers, dishing out IPs, just like your router. It is normally best to have just one DHCP server on the network, the router, unless you know how to setup subnets routing tables and stuff like that. That's usually what prevents one router from working with another. Most routers can be configured though. You can normally run a cable to the switch too. The length of the cable and type determines the distance. That's how business' do it. You can find the max lengths of the different types on the web.

sounds like u need to set a 'split wifi' one for dahjah with a secure password and other for 'guests' with a simpler password

If you're worried about security, use a cable. While there is someone there, do NOT use logins to your websites or whatever. There are sniffing tools that will gather data over the network. If you store network passwords on the pc, and I have access to your pc, I can get the network passwords in the time it takes me to type the command. It's that fast.

I understand what you're trying to do and it leads back to the routers and subnets I mentioned. It can be done, but occasionally the consumer routers make you jump through hoops to get it to work properly and in some cases, don't work.

Something else you can do on most consumer routers, is save a working configuration to a file. If you save a working configuration, you can restore it at a later date or time. You could use two different configurations and restore them each time, but IMO, that's could be risky depending on the frequency of when you're doing it. Once a month, I don't really see an issue. Multiple times a day, I see an issue.
