MG, you missed the first part of what I said uppa top.
They built the large vehicles at a time when there was a demand for it. If there was not a demand then, the sales would not have gone through the roof back then.
However, you can't turn around tooling, and design on a dime. You have to have development time. Also, it is not like they were not building small cars. Just not enough of a variety for the consumer, and to make a profit on the then low volume of small cars that were available, to offset the loss of sales on the large vehicles.
Also, the American manufacturer are dealing with the perception that the foreign car quality is better.
