Toyota Dealers Pull ABC TV Ads; Anger Over 'Excessive Stories'
'Punishment for Reporting' as Southeast Dealers Shift Commercial Money to Non-ABC Stations

Toyota dealers in five southeast states have pulled their commercials off ABC TV local affiliates, complaining about the coverage of Toyota safety problems by ABC News and its chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross.

Executives decide whether to recall the Prius over software glitch.The ad agency representing the 173 dealers told ABC affiliates last week that the shift was due to "excessive stories on the Toyota issues." The dealers shifted their commercial time buys to non-ABC stations in the same markets, "as punishment for the reporting," according to an ABC station manager.

ABC News and Ross began reporting on the problem of "runaway Toyotas" last November in a series of stories that preceded the large recalls ordered by the company, and apologies for quality shortcomings as well as misstatements about the extent of the defects. Toyota is now expected to add the 2010 Prius to its list of recalled vehicles.

It's the only successful hybrid. Sales of all the others are low.

The expected recall of the Toyota Prius hybrid for braking problems may seriously hurt the entire green car movement. The Prius is particularly loved by its owners--just talking to them will confirm this. But the safety recall, which is on TV and in the press every day even though Toyota hasn't announced it yet, is certain to hurt its reputation and hurt its sales. That's a problem for the entire hybrid "industry" because the Prius was really the only success. Prius has 48% of all hybrid sales, and all Toyota ( TM - news - people ) hybrids account for two-thirds of hybrids sold here. Look at the numbers for the full year:

We might note that GM has killed the Saturn line and stopped building the Malibu hybrid, cars that accounted for nearly half of last year's GM number.

So a total of 291,000 hybrid vehicles were sold last year, down 8% from the previous year. It's a tiny number, even of the 10.4 million cars sold last year, but the decline is rather small considering that total vehicle sales fell 21% last year from 2008. The jump in Ford Fusion hybrid sales helped.

But what happens now? Toyota's safety problems could cripple hybrid sales. Two models, the Camry and the Highlander SUV, are on the bad accelerator pedal list. And there's a different braking problem in the Prius. One thing is certain: The safety problems won't help the hybrid business.

We should remember that there are three major points about hybrids:

It is not becauyse the are mad. It is the usual marketting action.
