Toyota recall: 8,000 2010 Tacoma trucks for faulty drive shaft

here is yet another recall for Toyota vehicles and this time it's the 2010 Tacoma pickup truck. On Friday, February 12, Toyota issued a recall for 8,000 of their 4WD Tacoma trucks to fix a problem with the front drive shaft. The automaker, already in the news with several other recalls, informed dealers that a crack could develop that <span style="font-weight: bold">could lead to the front driveshaft separating and falling from the truck, causing the vehicle to lose control.</span>

The recall is for all 4-wheel drive Tacomas that were built from mid-December 2009 to early February 2010.

The Proposed Remedy:

Dealers will have to perform an inspection to identify the specific lot numbers located on the front drive shaft. Based upon the inspection results the front drive shaft may need to be replaced.

Toyota has indicated that it will be sending out recall postcards to 2010 Tacoma truck owners in mid- March 2010. Until then, customers can call the Toyota recall hotline: 1-800-331-4331.

There was no indication that this is an urgent issue yet the fact that it's the drive shaft that is in question seems to warrant service faster than &quot;postcards will go out in mid-March&quot;.

This recall is in addition to two other recalls for Toyota Tundra trucks. These include the 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra truck recall issued for the floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals and another recall for sticking accelerator pedals.

heard on the news Toyota execs were gloating they saved Toyota 100 million on recalls by replacing floor mats.

problem is, everyone thinks because Toyota makes cars in North America as well and there creating jobs in places like Cambridge Ontario for one,
but the reality is they may make 75,000 cars in North America, but they import a lot more.

US begins probe of runaway Prius in California

WASHINGTON — US safety investigators have begun to probe the case of a runaway Toyota Prius in California, sources said Tuesday, in an incident threatening to undermine the Japanese automaker's effort to repair its battered image.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration &quot;is gathering details on yesterday's incident involving a recalled Prius that accelerated out of control,&quot; a source familiar with the matter said.

&quot;Two investigators are flying out to California to examine the car and look for potential causes.&quot;

The latest case involved James Sikes, 61, who was driving his 2008 Prius on the busy Interstate 8 freeway outside San Diego when he noticed his car starting to accelerate of its own accord, the California Highway Patrol said.

The terrified motorist was helpless as the car raced along the road at speeds of more than 140 kilometers (90 miles) per hour.

Tragedy was only averted after Sikes was able to call police, and officers using a loudspeaker talked the driver through the process of slowing down by using his emergency brake and then turning off the engine.

Toyota later issued a statement saying technical specialists had been sent to San Diego &quot;to investigate the report and offer assistance.&quot;

The drama was a chilling echo of the tragic accident last August where off-duty California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor and three family members were killed when the accelerator became stuck in the Lexus ES350 in which they were riding.

Officials said there was no information about any additional recalls. The 2004-2009 Prius was already subject to a recall for &quot;pedal entrapment&quot; in November, and the 2009-2010 Prius is subject to the recall over braking system problems.

The Japanese auto giant has recalled more than eight million cars and trucks worldwide, including six million in the United States, to address potentially deadly defects blamed for incidents of sudden, unintended acceleration and other issues.

US regulators said last week that they had received more than 60 complaints from Toyota owners reporting sudden unintended acceleration despite having their recalled vehicle repaired by a Toyota dealer.

Toyotas are Safe (Enough)

So driving one of these suspect Toyotas raises your chances of dying in a car crash over the next two years from .01907 percent (that’s 19 one-thousandths of 1 percent, when rounded off) to .01935 percent (also 19 one-thousandths of one percent). <span style="font-weight: bold">[Math explained in link to article.]</span>

I can live with those odds. Sure, I’d rather they were better, but it’s not worth losing sleep over. And I don’t think it’s worth all the bandwidth the Toyota story has consumed over the past couple of months.

But lots of Americans seem to disagree with me. Why?

I think one reason is that not all deaths are created equal. A fatal brake failure is scary, but not as scary as your car seizing control of itself and taking you on a harrowing death ride. It’s almost as if the car is a living, malicious being.

Maybe we should get used to this kind of scare, because cars are becoming more like living beings. I suspect that Toyota’s acceleration problems lie in the software — the “electronic throttle control,” which replaces the old-fashioned direct mechanical link between your foot and the throttle with a “brain” that “decides” how much the throttle should open in response to foot pressure, depending on the circumstances.

I’m not a fan of electronic throttle control — I didn’t like the feel of it when I bought my Toyota, and I still don’t — but it’s getting hard to find a car that doesn’t have it. So too with various other little vehicular brains, like electronic stability control, which will deny you permission to take turns at dangerously high speeds; our cars are, increasingly, software-driven — that is, they’re doing more and more of the driving.

But it worries me that this Toyota thing worries us so much. We live in a world where responding irrationally to risk (say, the risk of a terrorist attack) can lead us to make mistakes (say, invading Iraq). So the Toyota story is a kind of test of our terrorism-fighting capacity — our ability to keep our wits about us when things seem spooky.

Passing the test depends on lots of things. It depends on politicians resisting the temptation to score cheap points via the exploitation of irrational fear. It depends on journalists doing the same. And it depends on Americans in general keeping cool, notwithstanding the likely failure of many politicians and journalists to do their part.

ETA: one thing that confusing to me is why if is a software problem is not more widespread. you would think the incidence would be more than a couple hundred in 8 million.
