Can I get some help – thoughts?

We have a new car and an old car.

The old is a ‘97 Nissan Pathfinder.

Has always run great.

Lately, the past few months, drama with the transmission.

I took it to a mechanic – long story short, he confirmed what we thought was the problem – the transmission is slipping, blah blah blah, throttle position sensor is bad, blah blah blah.

He gave me a price of $2200 to fix.



I talked him down to $2000.

Is this a good/ fair price ... ?

Yes, I’m going to get other estimates (IF, I can even manage to get it to drive to another shop!) but I just want to know if anyone out there has any thoughts on this.

if dat is fi rebuild de tranny, yes is a good price.
If a jus de sensor, get a nex opinion.

I plan to try & get it to another mechanic on Tuesday for another opinion but - how do I know if it's just the sensor????

normally if your tranny is slipping it means some of the plates inside have gone bad therefore a tear down an rebuild would be necessary. As fi de sensah yuh haffee ha smaddy yuh cyan chuss fi tell yuh dem tings. Ask them how much is the sensor, and what it would cost just to change that alone, just for information sake.

Rebuild will cost you bout 2Gs.
I would sell the car in about 2 years time still cause a rebuilt transmission bound to give you problems downt the road.

DJ - I've now gotten him down to $1900 - he wont go any lower - he wanted $2200 originally.

Something about the guy I kinda believe in.

I like that he did all the diagnostic work at not charge - no charge to read the codes, no cars to test it - nothing.

Some places I've taken my car to in the past, they charge you just to drive up to the garage it seems.

I'm going to do it - but I think I'm going to wait until hubby gets back.

Magix - they offer a 4 year warrantee on the work so ... that's a plus.
