4x4 vs. AWD

I would like to buy a new 4x4 in 2011. Earlier this year, my 2002 Ford Escape was a life-saver during the double blizzard in Washington. I put it in 4-wheel drive and it was awesome. My son now owns that car.

So I am looking at mid-size SUVs. I am confused. I want 4x4 but I see AWD on models I am interested in.

What's the difference between 4x4 (4 wheel drive) and AWD? Can you tell me without using the word 'torque' in it?

Go AWD, since it's full time, there are less parts to go bad or replace in the future.
AWD wid TC (Traction control) And Stability system.

Most new vehicles in the category you're looking for that have AWD have the other two as well.
