Most dealerships basically pay their mechanics, on commission, so there is no incentive to let a car go out the door without collecting some money from the customers. If they have to do the same job again for free, for example, because it was not done right, or some kind of screw up, it comes out of the mechanics pay. This is what a USA dealership representative personally told me, when I asked that question a while back. The mechanics also buy their own (small) tools. Specialized tools, they have to sign out, and if it goes missing, then that mechanic have to pay to replace it. Also, they can only sign it out for a specific amount of time.

So here is how it went this morning:

I arrive at dealership to pick up my car and was sent to Cindy the Cashier to pay my bill. When given paperwork to sign:

<span style="font-weight: bold">Me</span>: Thanks, Cindy. Do you accept American Express?
<span style="font-weight: bold">Cindy</span>: Yes.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Me</span>: Super. I want you to know I will sign this bill 'under protest' because I do not agree with the charge.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Cindy</span>: er..would you like to speak with our Service Director?
<span style="font-weight: bold">Me</span>: I don't think so Cindy. I have spoken enough to the Service Manager assigned to my car. &lt;I sign per picture below&gt; May I have a photo-copy of this?
<span style="font-weight: bold">Cindy:</span> Sure. &lt;She goes to copy machine in a separate room. She is gone for a while. Errol, the Service Director approaches me.&gt;
<span style="font-weight: bold">Errol:</span> Ma'am, do you have a dispute with your bill?
<span style="font-weight: bold">Me:</span> Why, yes. But I've taken care of signing it under protest and Cindy has gone to make a copy. Oh, here she is. &lt;Cindy hands paperwork to Errol.&gt;
<span style="font-weight: bold">Errol:</span> Ma'am please come with me to my office.

In his office, Errol looks at statement and proceeds to question my protest. I told him <span style="font-weight: bold">very calmly </span>that I had no time for discussion as I had an appointment I must get to. I said that I had taken my car here for years for service and that I felt that XXX Ford was nickle-and-dimeing me for $150. He proceeds to tell me that he would need to speak with the mechanic, blah blah blah. I was not having any of this. Inside I was outside I was

<span style="font-weight: bold">Me:</span> Do what you need to Errol. Why don't you work out the details and call me with your findings? Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get my car so I can be out of here.

I get up, go to the cashier, take out my Amex card. Errol runs after me, takes the paperwork from Cindy, writes<span style="color: #990000"> &quot;No Charge. Courtesy of XXX Ford&quot; </span>and signs it. He then motions someone over to get my car immediately. I calmly turned to Errol and said, &quot;Thank you.&quot;

Car arrived. I'm out. No charge.
