Iditarod 2011! ROOTIN FOR NEWTON!!!!

Let's all wish Newton safe travels and a successful ride as he begins his second Iditarod journey across Alaska today!

I can't believe it's finally here! I have been waiting for months to see Newton come back and do Iditarod again, this time as a seasoned musher now that he has his Rookie race completed and his belt buckle.. I couldn't be more excited!

Sadly, I missed seeing Newton's departure from the starting gate this afternoon. I have my Insider subscription all paid for and was ready to watch it via iPhone, but no luck, I have to wait until it's posted. Work can sure get in the way of fun sometimes!

I imagine I will catch the official start tomorrow and this is the one that counts the most so it's all good..

At the site, you can track standings updates, view general photos, and some general video, all free to anyone.

With a paid subscription, in case anyone is interested in tracking Newton through GPS and seeing a whole lot more video not available for free there are a number of packages available at different rates. Here is the link:

I will come here to this thread during the race and post links when I can but I might not update as fast as things happen. (Anyone else following along, please do post too, cause I am busy busy the next couple of weeks!)

Vannie, I will find out for you how to get them to him. Unless, you are planning a trip a yawd in the next some months, then you could deliver them in person if you happened to go by Ochie.

This is so exciting! I can hardly wait! I hope I don't miss the Official Start tomorrow (I should be home in time, but I will be in Duluth, cheering on JDT Sprint Musher Robb and his trainer Ken at the sprint races here in town!). Either way, I have my Insider video I'll catch it.

I'm not plugging the Insider subscription, but I got one last year and it was well worth the price of admission, there is a LOT more to see there.

Vannie, I am not sure when Newton will be going back. The race goes on for most of two weeks, then there will be media blitz, I am sure. Newton is living with Lance Mackey at Comeback Kennel in Alaska, in the meantime. The facebook page will probably tell the most current news! Otherwise, JDT mushers Robb and Jermain will be there at Chukka Cove, where is the home of the JDT by then! I can tell you after tomorrow when Robb is going back. I will see him tomorrow morning! Jermain is already back to the Island.

Newton is well on his way.

This is the route from Anchorage to Nome that Newton will take this year. It is different from last years route, as there are two of them and they alternate.

It was more than a little disappointing this afternoon when they played a commercial at Newton's departure time on the Iditarod site! I sure hope they have a better video to view at a later time.

I was able to get his screen print of him before the connection broke and all was lost...



The report from the JDT website is as follows...

Newton Marshall left the 2011 Iditarod Re-Start line, reaching out to the crowd all the way down the chute and, again, dancing on his runners! All smiles here!! Rootin' for Newton!!!

One of the towns on the trail is called <span style="font-weight: bold">Unalakleet</span>

It's something that would be coming out of my mouth if mi get icicle inna mi eye like that!

Newton is currently in 35th place, and resting at Rohn, which is 169 miles into the race. There are a pack of mushers right now at Rohn, and they are resting up for the next leg of the journey to Nikolai, which is at the 243 mile marker.

Newton is traveling at an average speed of 12 mph. That's a good speed, and faster than many of the other teams.

Newton is playing it safe and not risking the fate of his team wearing out too soon, which happens a lot of times. Giving himself and his dogs a good amount of rest, will help them go the distance more assuredly.

Newton has dropped 1 dog so far, so he is on the trail with 15 dogs.
