For those of you who remember the World Cup Football 1982 and 1986 with not only Maradona but the best Brazilian team captain, Socrates who led his team to the finals (but didn't won).. he has passed away at age 57.
I remember the doc. He turned pro at the ripe old age of 25, qualifying to be a medical doc before playing for Corinthians in Brazil.
I remember his tremendous balance on the ball. He rarely fell to the dirt. Always seemed to evade a tackle. A great passer of the ball. Had great split second sight.
He was 6' 4" and very thin.
All during that time he smoked and drank.
Alcohol related poisoning did him in the end.
I saw only one game of the 82 world cup.... The Russia Brazil game.. ( I was in my socialist phase then) ... so supported the USSR.. Brazil was rubbish skills no organisation, USSR was organisation no skills then they scored..
I recall that Scorates held the ball in the middle and basically went cross the feild all the time organise, his team. acting like the center of a spoke on a wheel.. He made the russians drap their glaita... and then Brazil won....
Still I never heard who won the world Cup that year....
This has taken me down to memory lane... sitting on the living floor with my brother, eyes glued to the television. The two of us rooting for Brazil. Man, we were fans of Zico and Socrates. I remember that match but can't remember if it was a penalty kick that made Italy won.... Or maybe I'm thinking of the following world cup against France winning through a penalty kick.
