What about the external hard drives?

Should I just get a USB drive (s) to back up my data and carry as needed?

does an external hard drive have to be connected to a pc or is there a thingy I can connect to the router and have all networked PCs backup to it?

There are quite a few options now days but I still suggest another hard drive for backups. I keep 2 hard drives in every PC I own to make it easier to keep copies of data. You can use an external drive or an internal, but with a network situation I'd think an external would be more use. You can share this backup drive on the network so other pc's on the network can access it but be careful with shares (its another vector for attack).

Depending on what you need to backup you can also use mini-USB drives. I have one for my phone and its 1gb in a flash drive, fast and easy to use on any PC with a USB port. Another option would be to burn off data onto CD's but that can be time intensive and may not work for you depending on the data you want to backup. I've also seen internet sites that offer remote file storage so you can upload your files to a secure server out on the net.

CD
Internet Storage
Flash Drive
External/Internal Drive
