A timely five-wicket haul from Odean Brown and a well-played 155 from Donovan Pagon put Jamaica in a strong position heading into today's third day of their Regional Four-Day Tournament clash against the Leewards at Sabina Park.
Brown, who struggled to find form in Jamaica's previous two matches, claimed immaculate figures of five for six, while Pagon, who was not out on 106 overnight, went on to make a top score of 155, as the Leewards, in chase of Jamaica's first-innings total of 404 for eight, were blown away for 104 before the scheduled close of play.
"First and foremost, I want to say congratulations to Pagon. He batted really well throughout his innings," said Brown, who ended as the leading wicket-taker during last month's Caribbean Twenty20 Tournament.
"I would say coming from the Caribbean Twenty20 I was kind of into that rhythm a bit and fell off in the opening two games.
"However, since those games I have been putting in a lot of work inside the nets to get back the feel of the four-day cricket, and it paid off today," he added.
Resuming the day on 220-3 and looking to set a big lead, Jamaica were primarily assisted in their efforts by Pagon, David Bernard Jr - who made 70, and captain Tamar Lambert, who chipped in with 51.
Pagon batted for just over five and a half hours, faced 330 balls and hit four sixes and 14 fours, while Bernard Jr hit five fours and a six during his supporting knock.
Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr, who made a pair of duck in Jamaica's previous game against Barbados at the same venue, did better with the bat this time around, making 26.
The Leewards, who would no doubt be cursing themselves after dropping Pagon on nought on the first day, were led in their bowling department by off-spinner Justin Athanaze, who took three for 102, and Tonitto Willett, who pocketed two for 73.
Chasing the biggest total of the competition so far, the Leewards, who lost their first two games inside three days, knew that they had a monumental task and had to bat out of their skins to make a match of the situation.
However, courtesy of Brown and company, they were never allowed to settle and in the end surrendered meekly.
Also getting among the wickets were the in-form fast bowler Andrew Richardson, who collected two for 23, and Nikita Miller, who ended with two for 23.
Batting for the Leewards, wicketkeeper-batsman Devon Thomas, who missed their opening two games due to injury, top-scored with a brief but entertaining 38, while Monticin Hodge made 33.
"I thought we batted poorly, even though some balls kept low, and that contributed to our downfall," said Thomas.
"We are far behind, but if we are asked to bat again we will just have to bat for time, as we still have two days remaining, and the runs will come," he declared.
Play will resume at 10 a.m.
