The impact of social media continues to bite at the London Olympics with Greek triple-jumper Voula Papachristou sent home over a racist Twitter comment.
Greece’s Hellenic Olympic Committee has cracked down after Papachristou’s comments on Twitter mocking African immigrants and expressing support for a far-right party.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the committee said Papachristou was dropped from the Greek Olympic team "for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement."
A storm erupted on Greek social media after Papachristou’s tweet on Monday. Media outlets have translated the tweet to the following: ‘‘With so many Africans in Greece… At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!!!”
The triple jumper attempted to apologise on Wednesday with the following tweet: ‘‘I apologize if I insulted people! I have no mingling with politics!!! I am only Athlete!!”
The West Nile virus is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes of African origin. The disease can be fatal to some humans. More than than 180 people were reportedly infected in Athens this summer.
Papachristou was yet to arrive in London before the athletics competition gets underway in the second week of the games.
