Had the discussion with girlfriend's 11yo at the time. Since his papa allowed him to do pretty much anything, the point was mute. We had many many discussions about online stuff (which is the worst part of the game) but otherwise, I think the game allows them to think logically. Now he's playing Call of Duty PS3 online, and I'm monitoring that. He's 14 now and of course knows everything. I did allow him admin access to his pc, but he has since lost that capability after getting malware on the pc multiple times. You can also google parenting forums to see what others say about the games. I think the worse part is the online access as it leaves ports open, but it's a toss up. I think he is learning that free doesn't always mean free.
