Hi All
On my recent visit to Jamaica last week, it was great to engage mobile technology of both Digicel and Lime. I have to say that Digicel have the edge it seems in most quarters and I would have to say a massive step forward.
My problem was trying to use a data sim from Lime in an unlocked Mi-Fi modem. That was a nightmare and I had to end up using it in an unlocked smartphone and the whole connecting thing was a rigmerole! Whereas, I should have trusted my instinct as Digicel seemed to have better portability though you had to hustle through the Blackberry offer.
My experience however was that though slower I was connected and able to get stuff even if it was through GPRS (My last visit was a library job!). What was really good was going to a well known Track stars bar and having free wi-fi via Digicel which was a pleasant surprise.
I think going to 4G might make sense but many places are still on two outside built up towns and did not get to test this out. Be good to hear of others experiences.
The good news was I was able to get a signal to call the UK and send e-mails etc even in Northern Clarendon which was pretty cool. Highlight was calling the UK by cellphone from Bullhead Mountain!
The issue about Wi-Fi in a hotel I stayed at was another story. $15US a day!! or $30 for the week! Only available in the lobby areas (Poor). If you had a cell/mobile made more sense to use this. OK if you have a business account but also no routers that you could use in your rooms???
Anyway, just a small offering.
Be interested in thoughts on this.
Peace.

Then while travelling around I found that a lot of places away from my hotel offered free wifi. A free connection was not hard to find, sometimes in the most unlikely places.
