They Once Made Things to Last and Last!

For YEARS now I have been meaning to transfer all my fathers old 8mm movies and slides onto DVDs. I thought it would make a good gift for my siblings this Christmas, so this morning I dragged out his old projectors out of my sisters storage room where they have sat untouched for probably 25+ years. Both progectors fired right up just as if we had used them yesterday.

Yes, I transfered approx. 6 hours of my father's 8mm footage to DVD today. Some of it was of Jamaica's independence celebrations 50 years ago.

But guess what. Those tapes aren't made to last as they oxidize over time.
Nuff time when you hear seh ppl find some old tapes you will be lucky to get 1 or 2 plays out of them without degradation.
Hopefully you get them all transferred in nice condition.

Yes, that is very true.

The thing I found most troublesome is the film, because of its age has become very brittle. I had to handle it with extreme care. A couple of rolls broke apart while being fed through the projector, luckily very little was damaged. I estimate that I transfered approx. 3,000 feet of video and maybe lost about 6 feet due to damage.


Now comes the tedious part, editing all that video down to a an actual video that is worthy of viewing. I estimate about half of the film is either too dark, too jerky or just too plain boring to include.


I would love to post the footage of Jamaica's independence on You Tube and link it here when I am done. Probably just after x-mas. I have to get this project done first.

Just recently I was going through some very old pictures taken during the late 1940s of a group of then young, energetic, party loving, and globe-trotting men and women who were in their 30s. The pictures were in a collection of travelogue written by one of the women... all already passed away. The pics brought out an emotion inside of me... can't describe it... but it had to do with looking at those people who were perhaps younger than I am today and seeing the fun and mischief on their faces in the still pictures and realizing that today, they were all gone but forever immortalized in those pics.

The tape that broke apart u can reattach it back to the tapes using cella tape on the backside. It's like when we used to splice tape.
