CD splintered in the drive

OMG [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/helpsmilie.gif[/img] my computer CHEWED up a CD........ an mi mean chewed UP!

It came out in a million little shards like a broken mirror - i hadda turn the CPU upside dung and shake dem pieces out. Of course, i'm sure there's more in there.

other than the CD/DVD player, the computer seems fine, although i am worried about what them shards can do to the interior works of the thing.... mi nah waaan think bout ie

has this ever happened to anyone? The CD-drive can be replaced by itself, yes?

Yes and yes. Try the drive with another CD first; it may well still be fine. Generally this means there was a manufacturing flaw in the CD itself - it couldn't handle the stress of rotating that fast, and failed catastropically.

the Disc usually have minute cracks at th ecenter,that usually result in th eshattering of it.

thanks Ramble, already tried that - the drive won't spin at all now - won't play any CD's......

the CD was fine, no manufacturing glitches that i was aware of - it's been playin fine in the computer, as well as on my discman, my car stereo, and my work computer, with no trouble at all, for months.

hmmm, maybe Dudd's on the right track - maybe it had some small crack from so much play - but i have other CDs that are YEARS old & played a million more times than this one.... none a them ain't never cracked or shattered in either the home or work machines.

Well, I'm sorry you lost the use of your drive, but yes; it's a separate component and can be easily replaced.

thanks RambleOn,.,, yes is no doubt an easy replace-and-fix....... but taking the time to get dung under there and discombombulate erything, and carry it into the store, *sigh* I was burnin some music to get into the FedEx package that i wanted to send TODAY to JA...... usually if you can remove the drive and manually back it up you will find that small chips are stuck in it,but if you turn it over an nock it a bit (don't reak it) it will work as well as it did before,but it may be a good time to upgrade to a DVD writer now that they are cheap it fi was a CD player.

well it was a DVD.... it was the CD-DVD-Read-Write-Burn, etc etc "Everything" drive - this computer is only a year old.

and it's busted good - the whole front of the tray & the drive housing snapped right off. Had no choice, I had to muscle it to get the tray open to get the shards out, it kept trying to open-close-open-close, stuck in a never ending loop; it kept gettin hung up on some a dem broken shards inside and wouldn't stop. When i finally got it open, I saw that the 'hub' snapped off as well - y'know the middle part whe you set the CD pon ie -- that's just gone - I imagine the sharp lil pieces just sheared it right off when it was up inside deh spinnin, (they spinnin, they SPINNIN!!! ) [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/dizzy.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/dizzy.gif[/img]

This can and does happen from time to time. These drives spin a few thousand revolutions per minute, and while we think...big deal, its still pretty darn fast. Any imperfections within the disk are multiplied at those speeds and can lead to catastrophic failure of the drive. ie the disk blows up inside the unit while its spinning and hoses the drive in the process.

The fix? Well it sounds like the drive died in the process so you'll need to replace it. This is fairly easy to do, its just a few screws and a couple wires. It should just be a matter of opening the case, pulling the old drive and unplugging 2-3 wires, then slide the new drive in and connect the same wires that you just unplugged. Boot up and the pc should see the new hardware and install the drivers for ya. tada...fixed.

You forgot th elittle thing called disc sequence. You have to check if it is CS= cable select, MA =master or SL=slave and set the jumper of the new one to match.
since the machine is only a year,i would guess is is CS.

Ah yes the joy's of jumper switches.

Even with setting a jumper switch its still a ~10 minute fix. It would take me longer to pull my 4u rack mount case than it would to install the drive.

You'll get the info on the jumpers settings from the doc's that come with the new drive. Its fairly simple stuff, its just a small black jumper that slips over two small metal pins on the back of the drive, the jumper connects the two pins to make a circuit which identify if its Master/Slave/CS.

Once you pull the old drive look at the back where the jumper pins are. Usually they stamp the metal with M (for Master) S (for Slave) or CS. If there are no jumpers at all then its set to Master. If its not marked at all you'll need to google the old drive to find a manual for it, which will tell you what the jumpers are currently set at.
