the dealer wanted me to bring the car in at 5k, it's now over 10k. plus funny sound with brake. am worried it will cost a fortune at the dealer, but since is a new car i'm thinking somehow that's who i should take it to.

I would take it to the dealer. Dealer tune-ups are not like the teefing ones of days gone by. I have been taking my new and used cars to dealers - Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan - for the past ten years and have been very satisfied with service. I had a problem with the Ford dealer last year but Ja.com helped me resolve it
Things like tire replacement or fixing dings in the body I would take to independent shops. -
I use only the dealer and that is what I would recommend. However, you are risking losing warranty coverage since the car is not being maintained as per schedule. Now, 5K sounds too soon for a new car. Did you check your owner's maintenance manual to see what it says? Use the dealer as long as de vehicle have warranty, aftah dat if you have smaddy yuh kno well who is a mechanic den yuh cyan deal wid dem.Comment

Good ting dese veekles have oil life systems pan dem now. You got the cruze right? If so I think yuh cyan duh some crazy mileage pan it b4 getting an oil change.
Supm like 18000km I think? But they will tell you that you shouldn't do that and you should keep coming in every 5k. If dem tell yuh dem foolishness deh nuh listen tuh dem.
As fi de sound in de breaks it may be dirt or a sound that is normal that ur not used to hearing. If anyting is wrong wid it, dem haffi replace dem at no cost to you.Comment

What Peasie said..dealer pricing is much more competitive these days. And sometimes some of the servicing gets covered by the manufacturer.
Ex, one time I went in because the check engine light was one
. Dem check it out and discover that it was some defect and the repair was 100% covered by Honda. Since it was also time for my oil change and whatever dem had to do required draining the oil, dem just include the oil change and I think I only paid for the price of the filter.
I have an old car and I only use the dealer. Oil changes are 22.95, I think the last time I checked Jiffy Lube was 29.99. My manual recommends service every 7,500 miles and that is about $70. I don't drive a lot, so it comes to less than twice a year that I have this type of service.7/5th of all people do not understand fractions.Comment

so here i am, $130 later after a visit to the dealer. got upsold quite efficiently by the guy at the counter. oil and filter, tire rotation, and checkup. i agreed because i am putting a lot of mileage on it fairly quickly - in less than six months i've racked up over 10k kilometres.
so yeah. all good, still.Comment
