I think I really made a booboo

OK Techies I need some major help! I usually use Sonic Record Now to write CD's. Today I was making a disc to take to the photo lab and when I try to open the program it says:

"No compatible recordable or rewritable devices could be found on your system"

What did I do and what can I do to fix it?

Did you install some/a software recently?
Can you see your CD Burner in My Computer...assuming of course that you are using M$s.
If you are using XP try writing to the drive using XP

If one or all is true let the forum know.

For instance if you can see and or write to the drive then we can isolate all in favour of the setups in Sonic.

I have XP.

How do I send it to the drive? I tried "Send to" and one of my options is the record now program, it attempts to open it then I get the error stated above.

Could you have accidentally stuck a blank DVD disk in the CD recorder, instead of a blank CD? Can your unit burn both DVD and CD medias? Do you ONLY have a CD burner, and a DVD player unit?

I have a CD burner and a DVD player.

A while back I went thru and uninstalled some programs that I didn't show usage on in a long while. Could I have deleted that drive? If I put in a blank disc I still get the same error.

Hi did you delete or uninstall?
Even with an Uninstall, there could have been shared resources, that were accidentally removed.
It is rather unlikely that any Program or parts of a program you took out should cause a drive to be hidden from the operating system
Hence my advise to you:

Windows XP includes a native CD-R Writer/Reader
So to test the functionality of the drive, simply drag some files over to the drive and drop en in or on it.
You can test it without a CDROM in the drive, but it would be better write something to a BlankDisc sitting in the Drive.

When you first Drag or Copy files to the drive it does nothing, only inform you that there are files ready to be written to the CDROM in the drive.
You can now open the drive by clicking on it, then selecting from the menu wether to burn or to discard the pending files.

Additionally I think right clicking on or in the drive will offer you a couple of options.

Hopefully you have found this helpful.
If you are still problems you can try to re install the software or try another Burner.

how would I drag n drop the file? Where would I find the drive? I go to my computer and I show my documents and the C drive. The CD/DVD drive would be D right?

If you only had two physical drives and no USB Drive(s), yes the next drive after the C Drive would be D, most likely a CD/DVDROM.

You said you have a CDROM & and DVDROM or is it CD/DVDROM?

In any case load a blank CDR in the Drive
Since you have given over control of the Drive to a 3rd Party program the XP writer will not come up immediately.

Open another two Explorer Windows:
(One your WinDoze Keyboard Press the Windows key and E simultaneously
Do this twice to open two new Expllorer Windows.)
Size them approximately by dragging diagonally at the rightmost edge, top or bottom.

You want to be able to see the Drive letters in one Window.
In the other just open any folders that contains Images or other Data files.
Grab one of those files, drag it and drop it on the drive letter that corresponds to the CD/DVD-R Drive.
(Alternately you can right click on the file(s) of your choice and select copy).
Right Click on the Drive Letter for the CD/DVD-R and select paste.
If all is well you will then get confirmation that there are files ready to be written to the Blank in the Drive.

You can double click on the drive or the icon in the tray to proceed with the burn, discard or add new files to the operation.

that is my problem tho, I don't show the drive! I only show drive C the hard drive, a USB drive usually comes up as drive E. I can't find how to get to drive D.

Okay so we have established that is not seen by the System, for some reason is has disappeared.
Got to System Settings.
You can find this via the control panel or hitting the Windows Key, right clicking on the My Computer icon [select properties],

At the Systems setting click on the Hardware Tab.
Click on Device Manager
Click on the + of CD/DVD Drive tab to expand it.
You should see your Drive.

it has the little icon of the drive with a yellow "!" over it then it says Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512

It means there is a problem with it.
Remove it by right clicking on it then rebooting.
At the reboot see if WXP detects it.
Tell us what happens then.

OOK I uninstalled it and rebooted (nothing different during the start up. went back to my computer and the drive was listed so I attempted to open my program and it opened like normal so I prepared it to write what I wanted to write and it is workig just fine! Any idea what I did to cause this so I am sure not to do it again?

Here is the a simple layman's opinion my view only:

While unstalling/deleting some programs something got between the operating system and the drive.
The next time your preferred burner went to ask W-XP to present the drive for writing, W-XP could not find it, so it marked it as a fault, there and then it was not available for use by any other programs including W-XP.

When you removed it and rebooted it allowed W-XP to reaudit the System, detect that a new/previous hardware using the same Drivers is now back on the System and listed it available for use.
