Actually, the laptops are excellent! I watched a report on the project yesterday while here in Belize, and was very impressed with the effort. I saw the ones given to the kids in Columbia, and the battery lasts about 12 hours (they can be recharged at home by cranking a remote looking device), they are waterproof, can withstand being dropped, have built webcam, wi-fi (kids connect to the 'net via satellite at school) supposedly three times better than the conventional laptop, among other things.

Intel is one company that has gotten in on the act with their version of low cost laptop. Check out the specs on their Classmate here . This is a huge market, and it will be interesting to see if they can all hold the price as they are at the moment.
