ew information is indicating that the female Jamaican athlete who tested positive for a banned substance, at the May 4 Jamaica Invitational at the National Stadium, is an Olympic sprintmedallist.

The athlete and her management team were notified of an adverse analytical finding, after the detection of a diuretic, which is banned by theWorld Anti-Doping Agency because of its ability to hide the presence of performance enhancement drugs (PED) in the system.

Diuretics are drugs that help the body to get rid of excess fluids primarily through urination, as a result, decreasing the ability to detect PEDs.

It is still unclear whether the athlete has requested that her B sample be tested.

Jamaican track star Veronica Campbell-Brown has been tested positive for a banned substance.

Campbell-Brown was tested positive at the Jamaica Invitational Meet on May 4.

Campbell-Brown's A sample revealed the presence of a diuretic, which acts as a masking agent and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Diuretics are used to cause the excess release fluids from the body primarily through urination, as a result, decreasing the ability to detect performance enhancement drugs.

She travelled to Montreal, Canada with her management team on Thursday ahead of the B sample results, which today confirmed the positive finding.

Campbell-Brown was informed of the finding on June 3 and her sponsors have reportedly since been updated.

The International Association of Athletics Federations is expected to make an announcement early next week.

SANCTIONS are penalties that athletes and athlete-support personnel face when they commit Anti-Doping Rule Violations. They are banned from competing in sports and from using government-owned sporting facilities and the duration of the ban is dependent on the nature of the violation.

Nature of violation
1. Standard: 2 years
2. Trafficking + administration: 4 years
3. Whereabouts Violations: 1-2 years
4. Specified substances (reprimand – 2 years)
