Help! Scanner software

Howdy, J-kid. Hope you can help me with my problem.

I hauled out my old scanner, a CanoScan 500F (bought it around 2003), but couldn't find the disk. So this guy advised me to download free driver software from the internet.

I checked and found drivers compatible with XP (my OS) but couldn't get the final installation stage to work - it wasn't recognizing the filepath protocol.

I created a new admin account - that didn't work.

tried to download a version compatible with another OS (ME2000) - didn't work - it's saying that the filepath being sought by the installation wizard is not found.

so here i am with a slowed down computer because of all this re-downloading. I even tried downloading from a site that Google advised against, so maybe all that is causing problem.

What can I do? should i buy the software CD from eBay?

If you have other graphic peripheral like camara etc,you may nee to fisrt download a software name TWAIN. and make sure that you dont connect the scanner to the 'puter until you load the driver.

</div></div>you usually unhook the camara then load Twain then the driver.
Then you add the scanner then the camara.

MG, what format is the driver in? Exe, MSI, inf, ini, drv...etc?

It will make a difference which wan yuh hav.

Also walk wi through how yuh ah duh di install.

J-Kid - quick note to say that i've still not successfully been able to install a program and get the scanner to work. will pop back in later with step by step of what i've done since Dr. Dudd's advice, and to answer your other questions.

Can you post what file path it is looking for? Sometimes we can fool it, other times we have to go digging through the registry.

Also do you know how to delete TMP files? If so delete them.

My advise to remove all of the drivers u downloaded in the past few days that didn;t work, especially that one u got from a website google said may be harmful, whenever u download any file always scan with anti-virus before opening.
To get rid of them drivers u installed, go to Start menu, then control pannel, then add/remove programs, see if you can find any of the software on that list and remove them.

Now the software that u said gave an error that it couldn't find the file path, can i ask was this installation wizard one that appeared when u clicked on the exe file, or was it one that appeared when u plugged your scanner in? if it was one with the exe file then it sounds like there a problem with that file u have, if it's a installation wizard that pops up when u try to plugin a USB device(scanner) then u probably just need to select the driver u downloaded yourself via that wizard instead of getting it to search for the driver for u.

What version of windows are u using?
Make sure the download for the driver is compatible with your operating system(eg. windows XP, 2000)

Usually when it comes to scanners and software u will have a TWAIN driver which is essential and u can also have another piece of software which is the control pannel for the scanner, your best bet will be to go to the manufacturers website of your scanner, click on support or downloads then find the software/driver for your model scanner, this is the best place to get your download, if u can only find software that is for a different version of windows then u can get your computer to run software compatible with older versions of windows that your current one, i can tell u how to do this if u need to.
If the info above doesn't help then post back including the make+model.

Superantispyware is a good alternative to adaware and runs in the background 24/7 to protect u from any future bad files

Also check this website, u can run a free check on your computer and it will alert u to any bad files running on your PC, and just make your computer healthly again,

Regularly scan your PC for viruses, one of the most well known free antivirus is AVG, or another good one i reccomend is http://www.free-av.com i run both of these.

All these above are compatible and should run on your PC without any probs together but in general it's not a good idea to run more than one antivirus program as some don;t work well together. I'd advise to have at least one anti-virus software, and one anti-adware software installed on your PC to keep protected and always scan any file u download before u open with an antivirus program, most will add a option into your right click menu, so u just right click the file u downloaded and click on scan with AVG or whatever it is.
