Gen, tell wi a little bit about how yuh hav the router configured internal?

For example: Did you select PPPoE or Dynamic addressing for connection type, did you clone the MAC address....etc?

Sounds like it is probably the wireless signal strength. Even though when you connect, it probably show full signal, but when you have a weak signal, it usually drop the connection a few minutes later. The pc keeps some items cached, like DNS entries and gateway ip. So now because the wireless connection drop, the pc still going to the cached ips and it no longer have a connection. Next step you plug in the cable. The network card gets an ip/dns/gateway ip from the router and everything work again. Suggestion, look up the router on the manufacturer website and check to make sure you running the latest firmware. Once you upgrade the firmware, see if it any better. If not, relocate the router closer to the pc and away from any cordless phones.

How far from the router is the machine and what is the strength of th esignal yu get while you are connected?
wireless G signal is not as robust as they claim . It can be easily broken if it is at a little distance

the router deh right next to the computer suh I know it is not the signal. I do believe it is how it is config. the first time I installed it myself and I used it without a problem. next night someone changed the security to WEPP personal (I think thats it) and since then I have had problems.

the person also must have set mozilla as my default browser cause everytime i log on and go straight to IE it takes ages to load. but thats another chread \0/

ok. i have also been getting a blue screen when I shut down ( but i keep ignoring it and just shut down anyway) with a screen full of notes about "driver" and "dump" -well along those lines cause I cannot remember that long story -but that is also another thread \0/

Soh re-set it back to factory settings and den re-do it yuhself den.

One thing, if yuh have a dynamic type setup from your ISP, you need to make sure that the pc MAC address is cloned. You never did say what kind you have? If you not sure, ask your ISP. Who is your ISP?

(Chuckle) Don't be so sure it isn't the signal. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img] Based on what you posted, if the security isn't setup properly, then you may not be connecting to the router that you think you're connecting to. As posted, reset back to no security and test. If it works that way, then you can experiment with security. You will have to change both the laptop config and the router config. Not all laptops have a network card that can do the latest security, but any security is better than a router that is wide open. Also run an online scan.

Both of them have a *free* ONLINE scan, (which is what you want to use) but both direct you to download dem trial product. So you have to look around a bit to find the free link. Also search for and delete any files ending in TMP.
