Usain Bolt vs. Mo Farah, facing each other at a neutral distance of perhaps 600 meters? What track fan wouldn’t relish the chance to see that?
Bolt won the 100- and 200-meter sprints, the two shortest flat running events at the 2012 London Olympics, and Farah won the two longest, the 5000- and 10,000-meter races. The two men, good friends who are represented by the same agent and who playfully mimic each other’s signature moves, will be back in their specialties at the world championships in Moscow next month.
Now, Farah has raised the possibility of a race between the two charismatic stars.
"He's got his charity foundation, I've got the Mo Farah Foundation," Farah pointed out in London, where he won the 3000 at this weekend’s Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games and Bolt triumphed in the 100. Citing the potential of a lucrative fundraiser, Farah declared, "It would be great to do a distance where people, proper athletics fans, vote in on what distance they think is most suitable." To Farah, who is also the British record holder for 1500 meters, that distance would be between 600 and 800 meters.
"Are you up for that?" he asked his Bolt in London last week. "Come on, you've got to do it. Let's get it on."
Bolt was game, figuring, "It would be tough, but for charity. 600 would be better for me." Bolt, incidentally, has already assisted Farah’s foundation, donating his shoes from the London Olympic 100-meter final and then auctioning them off himself for more than $50,000.
