Did you do it from Start&gt;Programs &gt; Assesories&gt; Disk Defragmenter, Then select C??
Unless you do it this way yoy can only defrag individual files. One more thing. If you have to use the computer while you can. Otherwise it take a few hours depending on the size of yoyr hard drive.

Then it lists the various programs, from Adobe to Windows Media Player and Word.

It's the usual "Choose which program" box, but it doesn't have anything relating to the system.</span>

It is because you are not un the right defrag program.
Make sure you click on <span style='font-size: 14pt'> Start, programs, asserories,then system tools,then dis defradmentor</span> afain and see what happens.

You a have to start drom Start just as if yoy are going to close down.

If yiy partitionn yoyr disk you may have the machine wanting you ti choose e complete dick from the start program.

I've followed the steps, but it seems that the computer is not recognizing the program or command. And my hard drive is not partitioned.</span>

I've followed the steps, but it seems that the computer is not recognizing the program or command. And my hard drive is not partitioned.</span> </div></div>That would mean that your computer may be corrupted, or compromised,and the program is preventing yoy from doing this. Try and use system restore to a previous state,and keep doing so until you het a place where windows will defrag it.

What happens when you go Start-&gt;Run-&gt;dfrg.msc

Does it still bring up that window asking which program to use?

Edit: Continuing reply after getting forbidden message.

If it does, open c:\windows\system32
Find dfrg.msc and right click on it-&gt;Open with. Select from the list...Microsoft Management Console, then check "Always use the delected program to open this kind of file"

ETA: Tried the Start - Run - dfrg.msc option first and yes, that window still popped up. Then tried the second suggestion and got the above result. </span>

A don't tink is defrag you need, lol. Sound like this pc have some crap on it.

Assuming you're using windows xp? If so, can you find a file in the c:\windows\system32 called mmc.exe? If not xp, what version? You can type winver from the Start-&gt;Run box.

Oh, and yes, it is XP. </span>

Try doing a search for mmc.* (everything like you see it. The asterick is a wildcard.) Tell me if it find the actual file anywhere else, or if you find something like mmc.ex_

If you can't find it anywhere on the 'c' drive, then you'll need the original xp disk or another machine to copy the file from.

I It is just like any othe rsystem command. they have to be done from systems,ans that can only be done from programs file. I try it just now and the only command I can pull ip is a read command, one and exicute command. IfWhen it works you want to post it here,so that I can make note of it. because sometimes when yo piter is cirrupted I would like tio be able to use another shortcut defrag..
