Try doing a search for mmc.* (everything like you see it. The asterick is a wildcard.) Tell me if it find the actual file anywhere else, or if you find something like mmc.ex_

If you can't find it anywhere on the 'c' drive, then you'll need the original xp disk or another machine to copy the file from. </div></div><span style="color: #3333FF">Search found mmc.exe in the c:\I386 folder, another in a Windows\ServicePackUninstall folder and a third in a Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386 folder.</span>

Ok, copy it from the c:\I386 to the c:\windows\system32 directory. Once you do that, then the same steps as previous post again, where you use the c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe to open the dfrg.msc file. Basically you are copying the file so that you can use it. It is missing from the system32 directory and that is why you're having a problem getting to it. I would prefer not to use the one in I386 since it seems like something deleted it from the system32 directory where it is usually used.

Just because you have not been able to do it, doesn't mean that it can't be done. In fact, when dealing with windows, there are multiple ways of doing things. I run msc commands from the run box all the time. I do however agree that occasionally it is best practice to utilize another file to do something, but since I know many windows files are in various places on the pc, (as demonstrated above) then I will test those first to see what I'm dealing with. Many times there is a virus and if I use another of those files, the virus behavior is quite predictable.

Here is a test... Start-&gt;Run-&gt;dfrg.msc

If it doesn't work on your pc, then you have other issues, like maybe the current path doesn't include the directory where the file is located. It does <u>not</u> need to be a program file as in an 'executable' file, provided there is a path to the file in memory. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

It showed that my hard drive was about 45% fragmented. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek2.gif[/img] I knew it needed it because my computer has been crawling lately. But it also showed that my drive is 2/3 full, which means I need to get rid of a lot of crap. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif[/img]

Don't work on this machine. I got a [P[-UP THAT STATE THAT WIDOEWS CANT d dfg.msc in th erun dialog.
Anyway the copy I am using is one of the college lisence. So it may be a little messed up. But it free.
