Portable Hard Drives

[ILP]

I am shopping for one. A few questions:

1. Can they be used like a flash drive? Meaning I just want to have to attach it to the USB port and have it ready to go. I dont want to have to load any software.
2. Any particular brands that are better than others?
3. I was looking at about 80GB's or so? How much should I look to spend?

i bought nice likkle lacie, 100gb, is powered by USB.
Best ting if yuh have nuff music, yuhcyan put all yuh music pan dat an leff yuh laptop or pc free.

usually it will cost bout a dollah a gig.

1. Yes. (although you should be doing a disable before you unplug. I also prefer to format the drives to my preference, like ntfs instead of the fat16 that it came with)

2. They are pretty much the same. The one I have is branded Iomega with a Seagate drive inside. (you can also get a usb case and use any old ide drive you have sitting around.

3. Might as well look at the higher capacities. The price of the 80gb is around the same as the 320gb on sale ($79-$100US). The one thing you have ensure is the power supply. Some require an external power supply that you plug into an outlet, while others don't and get power from the usb port. The specs will not always tell you.

The key is for comparison as to the size.

that looks like a nice one dajah...

i use an external here at home.. and i have a travel one but it uses a power cord.. where this one doesnt need to have it....

how long does it last on the battery if its fully charged?

i just learned something. i thought that the power source was through the USB port? that is the kind that i want. i dont want to have to hook it to a wall.

Yes it is through the USB port. Other than the ones that hook to an electrical outlet, I'm unaware of any that use batteries in the USB device itself. If you have a lot of USB devices plugged in at the same time, then you might consider the one with power supply.

I haven't really chaecked, but it is not a big draw on de battry life. I have almost 6000 songs pan fi mi so far abd still have bout 60 GB leff pan it.

there are many out there that just need de usb fi run. Some are bigger than others. I wanted a slim compact one for the journey dem.
