when you get an error message saying that your Windows virutal memeory is running low?
I have only 2 programs open on my laoptop at the moment: tax software and IE.
I've had 6 programs going at once and never got this message before </div></div>
Either one or both programs are using up a lot of memory. Ine mahe what is called a 'memory leak'
Or you have somthing else in the background running from the registry that you are not aware of.
Or yoiy have a lot of programs that are open in your program manager or you .
the tax program isnt very "taxing" on my system. I have had 3 different versions of the same program running at once in the past and had no memory issues.
I checked the task manager and nothing but the two programs are operating. I dont have many programs that start up automatically on my laptop either.

There are multiple reasons for this message. Sometimes the cause isn't really obvious and requires some digging to find it. Normally windows manages the virtual memory itself. Sometimes you can tweak the size and have a noticeable effect on the speed of the pc. To see what size yours is set at, (assuming WinXp) right on My Computer-> Advanced Tab -> Settings (performance)->Advanced Tab. Look in the box at the bottom and see what is shows for paging file size. You can change it to a slightly higher size to see if the error goes away. (in 256mb increments) Next search for *.tmp files. Any that you find, you can delete them. Some will be in use and you can't delete them. Don't worry about them. Most people have at least a meg worth of temp files. That's space you can use on your hard drive. Lack of hard drive space can cause the error. As can the previously mentioned adware/spyware. That's all I can think of right now.
I had an old computer that I had norton on. It couldn't even get me online cuz norton required so much of the processor, so I would have to turn norton off, get online, then turn it on again. I switched over to AVG free and never had a problem since. ...and it doesn't cost anything. Trust me, Empress! (where's the "bang mi head" graemlin?) dyam...you of all people should know better than to ask for advice on Ja.com! Nylah...I don't know what provider you have...but msn, which I got, has more anti spam stuff on it than I can use, and it's adjustable. and that's free. then download "Spybot Search and Destroy". (my daughter unit, the "expert" has another one too, on top of that) that's free!....none of it takes the processing power Norton requires. trust me. heh heh.
Also...I don't know if it came with my puter ...but XP comes with a security center that includes a firewall already? Mine did.
