Comp, in short, your router is broadcasting the SSID which is what you are seeing, however, the NEW router was not configured yet to give your laptop permission to gain access. You must remember that the router is also a firewall (for protection) and if anybody could just log on willy-nilly just log on, then that would defeat the purpose. The software CD helps you to configure the router to give access to each laptop or general access (un-protected). In your hotel for example, they usually have it un-protected or they will give you a password or log on procedures.
