Wanna hear a sad story?

In October I ordered a new laptop from Dell. It came. Boy was it ever sweet. Well, except for the Vista program but I figured my way around it and installed Firefox and was happy enough until the next morning when I went to install my Linkseys. WELL...

The CD would not work. At first I thought it was just me being a techotard, but it wasn't. I went to Dell online support and they deemed the optical CD drive to be defective. Soon a tech support called me and told me they would be sending me a new optical CD drive to install on my NEW one day old laptop! NOT!!!!

I had to go higher up and demand a new machine be sent. I mean, come on...I shouldn't have to be taking a screwdriver to my brand new machine! Finally they opted to send me a new machine. Fine and dandy. About a week later it arrived!

I took it out of the box and after going through all the set up first time turning on stuff...I took out the Linksey's CD. WELL GUESS WHAT?????

Yep, the second machine had the exaxt SAME problem as the first! Need I tell you how many hours I spent on the phone, in tech support chats etc by now? But now the worst part is DELL stopped returning my calls!

About the 3rd day they finally left a message on my answering machine telling me "they weren't trying to pull a fast one, they were trying to figure out what to do", apparantly I was not the only one with the problem!

Finally on day 5 I got ahold of someone. I just wanted both of the laptops GONE! But, well, OK..I fell prey to the next idea they had. They sent a tecnician out to install a CD drive on the new laptop. OK, I decided I could live with that since the rest of the machine was pretty sweet and I was getting attached to it.

The technician comes. He installs the CD drive. It workd perfectly! He leaves, I start setting up my Linkseys. Of course I couldn't make it connect to the internet so by then it was late and I decided to start over in the morning. I shut the machine down.

Next morning comes...I start up the machine. I go to insert the CD and....IT NO WORK!!!!

Can you believe!!!! Yeah, it is a hardware conflict because of Microsoft's vista crap.

Can you also believe it took me almost a week to get rid of the machines? By then I had a letter from dell asking for the fist laptop back. (from another dept I suppose). I call DHL and try to get them to come pick them up and they don't come to my area of the universe! Two more days pass, and finally I hear the UPS is coming to pick them up.

They are gone now and I am gonna go buy a MAC!

Anyway, meanwhile...back at the ranch, my PC is in for some tune up and repair so at least I will have a machine I can use for now!

So much for microsoft and the new Vista! Why are they selling something with so many problems?

Hey, does anyone know where I can get a new laptop with Windows XP? That would be my first choice before turning to MAC.

You can download a free operating system from the web, Google Ubuntu.

My uncle has been using it for a few months now and he loves it.

Linux.

Nanook: Actually, I had a similar problem with the HP, but the problem was not the OS, but the software the company bundles with it - they are legacy drivers. It wasn't until I reformatted the drive and allowed Vista to detect the DVD drive before I got it working like a charm.

Well CEW, herin lies the rub. Last year my friends bought 2 HP laptops. One is good, the other one is crap. The one that crapped out, I was sitting here on thier desk top and not using the laptop. The laptop was not plugged in, it had been shut down and was just sitting on the desk. Suddenly...I am innocently having morning coffee when the machine starts beeping and making all sorts of noises and it felt hot to the touch. HP sent a box and it was gone and back within about 4 days. I gotta give HP credit for that. But..3 months later, now the thing is not under warranty, it won't even turn on. And HP wants 300.00 to fix it. This is a laptop that was hardly ever used. Sooooo...

This is all very frustrating cause I am at the point where I really need to have a laptop computer because of what I am doing with my bead business as I can't always be home. Grrrr. But yes, I am done with Dell and their hell.

Wow CEW that is all greek to me. But still...why in the world would one spend a bunch of money on a machine and have to reformat it and install operating systems and such to make it work---&gt; What if you are like me and a technotard? I really need to open a box with a new computer in it. Turn it on and it needs to work.

I hear the local college bookstore is a MAC dealer and maybe I will stop in there today. Dang things are spendy though but at this point, I almost don't care.

Anyone here have MAC experience? Do I have to learn how to do everything all over again? sigh...

It never gives me any grief.

Yes, they are more expensive but in the end, for the average computer user they are very dependable and very easy to set up and use. The TV commercials portraying Mac and PC say it all.

Thanks Milo, I think that is what I will do. The bead store has a Mac in the office desktop and he showed me. What a sweet thing! The whole machine is in the screen box! The extra $$ seems worth the cost, I am just gonna check into what kind of technical support/repair there is up here in the woods.

Nanook, mik caa argue wid nutten yuh sey so far. By di way mi noh like HP period. Mi did own wan ah dem PC, it was a dog. Mi bredda, and another friend hav wan ah den lap tops. Everytime di dam CD drive start up, it sound like ah small airplane taking off. Dem quality is not di greatest.

Thanks for the affirmation JKid! I am on a gateway now that is kind of a dog too, but hell, the thing is about 7 years old I think. It is a sad state of affairs this computer business at this time.

Oh, BTW, my brother has told me he had 3 Dell computers in his house and is having problems with all of them. At least he knows what to do about it. me, not so much. That is why I bought a new puter in the first place! Nuttin but problems! Man...and the best puter I ever had was a Dell, it was a great machine but got too old and it had to go.

Brother dear was going to do some research and let me know who makes a good unit but evidently he hasn't been able to find one since I haven't heard back. His only advice was to send those Dell laptops packin!

To set up the router, you don't have to use the CD. As long as the pc is capable of working with the security on the router, you can get it setup without the CD. Unfortunately, the wonderful techs don't know that. I spent way too much time arguing with them about that. The pc I'm on right now is using a router where I did not use the CD and I have it setup with security, mac address lists, etc.

About the CD not working...does it work with any other CD? Sometimes windows tries to be helpful and cause more problems.

WinXp is still available, although you now pay extra for it. Vista isn't so bad, but like any new operating system it takes a while for drivers to or programs to be updated to work with it. Nothing new since DOS 1.0. Vista also have that stupid account security. Once I figured out how to disable it, the operating system is much less aggravating. Thanks for the info LinSkinny. I could not get any kind of CD to work in the laptop, I tried several. Music, photo, and the Linkseys. What the heck good was the thing with no working cd, lol. NONE! Oh well. I am going Mac shopping. Soon, before the demand gets so huge the wait will be forever, cause just about everyone I know where I live is going to Macs.
