Occasionally there is information stored in the actual music file. What version of Windows/Media Player?

Will check in a few. You personal Playlist is an XML file ending in WPL that is usually stored in My Documents\My Playlists, but can be opened and edited with any Text Editor.
By chance, did you keep the default folders?

Re: windows media player
Okay nothing definitive but this is how I would proceed in the absence of a better method.
<ul>[*]I think you should prepare by:[*]knowing where your files are stored now[*]maintaining the same file storage system on your other computer
go to Tools Options[*]setup all the options that you desire but more importantly on the library tab check maintain my star ratings as global ratings in files.
<ul>[*]So after this setup your Windows Media Player hard settings as you did on the fist computer (watch folders, etc)[*]copy the various Playlist and the folders of the old computer.[*]open the Media Player on the New Computer[*]go to the Library[*]point it to your folder then select ask it to update the library
If all goes well you should be cooking with hot grease in a few minutes.
Now if you can find the Library’s XML file that holds its settings, you can possibly eliminate the manual update of folders steps.
In any case you can set it to update the watched folders automatically, which will grab media and PlayLists just the same..
All of this can be done via network, so it is not as time consuming as it seems.

I'm using version 11. Mainly I'm talking about keeping the genres and ratings. The playlists are mostly autoplaylists. so if the ratings and genres can stay it should be ok. Or else I have to do it all over again. Or what about the thing that transfers all your stuff from one computer to a new one? Will that do it? Please help I have a lot of music and I don't wannt to have to do it all overr again.
I moved stuff to another computer by copying the whole username folder to a hard drive and then copying it from there to the other computer. Maybe theres another file someplace that I should have copied too.

If you followed my instructions it should work.
<span style="color: #3366FF"><span style='font-size: 14pt'>Make sure in the options setting you tell it to save the ratings in the same folder as the music</span>.</span>
The rest of the information is meta-data stored within the music files itself, so on instructing the Library to update and pointing to the folders, the correct information should magically appear in the Library.
Since you have copied the folder en bloc from your system and retain the same file configurations you should have all the information necessary to rebuild your library in a similar fashion as on the first computer.
